St. David's Day

{ 11:33, Saturday, March 1, 2008 } { 3 comments } { Link }

Today, March 1 is St. David's Day.  I probably shared something about this last year.  One of my pet peeves is:  St. Patrick's Day gets a lot of attention each year.........while most people would say they have never heard of St. David's Day.  St. David was the patron Saint of Wales and this is a remembrance of the date of his death.  I am at least 3/4 Welsh and proud of it, so this is a fun holiday to me.  I can remember my Dad counting to 10 in Welsh when I was little, I always thought it was neat, oh how I wish I had learned that from him.

Our little town has a celebration of it's own as there are many with Welsh heritage here.  I thought it would be fun to share some pictures with you.....I actually remembered to take my camera!

This is the 20th year for the "Welsh Tea"

It is informal, come and go.  As you can see card tables are scattered around for folks to sit and visit.  Very spring feeling with the yellow tablecloth.  The Welsh flower is the daffodil, so they are on each table.

This is the serving table.  Of course hot tea is served along with Stone Cakes.  They are a cookie type dessert that were originally cooked on hot stones.  They also have coffee and cider available.......but what Welshman wouldn't want hot tea???

Notice the flag in the background, not the prettiest design, but it is the Welsh flag.  I have a sweatshirt with the same ugly dragon on it to wear!

Isn't this teapot just beautiful!  The hot tea is served from it each year. You can see it on the table in the above picture, but I wanted to show a close up.

Here is the lady that organizes the event each year.  She is cooking the stone cakes, instead of a hot stone, now they are done right there on an electric griddle!  They are best eaten warm, so someone cooks them all afternoon.  Yummy!

This shows some of the banners that are displayed around the room.  Some show maps, the language, etc.  of Wales.

Just have to share this one last picture.  This lady is 103 years old, doesn't look or act a day over 80!  She is amazing in so many ways, a very special lady for sure.

Well, I hope you enjoyed your St. David's Day visit, I enjoyed sharing it with you!

Country Blessings,

I spent a night in Wales, and thought it was beautiful. One day I want to go back and take a bicycle tour of the coast. There are a lot of people around here with Welch ancestry, but no festivals, I am afraid.

i am one of them ,Never heard of it .
