We had a nice weekend. It is so nice to finally be feeling up to par again completely! Saturday was the exotic auction which we love to attend. It is held 3 times each year in a town about 1 hour away. There are not that many exotic animals, mostly pygmy goats, llamas, donkeys, etc. a lot of poultry and rabbits too. It is fun and you never know what might be there. We intended to take a couple of things to sell, but the weather was not real nice so decided not to. Dh wasn't feeling like going for the day yet, so I drove down myself. There wasn't anything I was interested in so didn't buy a thing, but it was still fun. I came out to find it was sleeting........I don't drive in anything even a little slick, yuck! But, the roads were fine and I had no trouble at all coming home which I am very thankful for! That evening the FFA chapter at our school was having an auction, auctioning off the kids to work so many hours as a fund raiser. They had a really nice free meal before the auction started. We did go to that and had a nice time. This was the first one and I am sure they will do the same next year as it was a huge success! Some of the kids "sold" for $450 for about 5 hours of work........... We left early as Dh was not feeling well and we do not have that kind of money to spend!! A friend said he thought they took in around $16,000 overall that night! Wow! We were thinking we could hire a couple of kids to come out and clean the chicken house for $50 or so..........were we wrong!! I like to help the kids out, but not that much. I am glad it went so well for them though. So, if you need a money making idea for a group this might be it? When we came out of the school Saturday night it was snowing like crazy, we got another 2-3 inches. I heard the news say in Topeka they have had 17 snow storms this year............what a winter. Most have only been 2-4 inches or so and not lasted a long time, but so many storms have come through. Sunday we stayed home from church and other than chores just rested. It was a very relaxing day. I don't do much reading, but a friend had given me the book The Quilter's Daughter, I read most of the afternoon and evening yesterday and finished it this evening. I really enjoyed it and am proud of myself for reading the whole thing. I do quite a bit of reading online, blogs are my favorite, and then research on goat information or other info on animal needs and such. Today was a little warmer although windy. Another front is coming through bringing colder air again now! I took advantage of the "nicer" day and gave most of the goats their CDT booster shot this afternoon. They are about a week away from starting to kid. Exciting!! I should have done the shots a couple weeks ago, but with the flu bug hitting it didn't get done. Dh didn't feel like helping me today, so hope to finish about 10 in the morning if it isn't too cold. Some of them are too much for me to hold and give the shot too. If I just had to do it I could have put a halter on each one and tied them up and managed, but it will be quicker if he can just hold them and I will give their shot and be done. A couple need wormed too. A note to those of you who raise goats. A friend learned this lesson the hard way over the weekend! She had a brand new baby get into the water bucket and drown. I never leave a water bucket in the birthing pen even before they kid as I have a fear that they could have the baby and it fall right into the water. You know with goats if something can happen it will!! Seems like they are an accident waiting to happen sometimes doesn't it? Supper tonight was fried chicken breast, mashed potatoes and gravy, and broccoli it was yummy. I see so many of you making out menus ahead, I know that is a great idea but it doesn't work well for us. Dh is a very picky eater and that makes it difficult all the way around. We usually just go with what sounds good at the time. Some days we eat a late breakfast then maybe don't eat again until supper time. Somedays not much for breakfast, then a big lunch and small supper. You just never know around here?? With just the two of us we can do that, I guess. Today is our oldest son's birthday, Happy Birthday Jimmy! Now this is a bit hard to imagine.........but I was 13 years old when he was born! Dh is 7 years older than I and it is his son. That helps to explain how we have 2 great grandkids at my age (which is almost 55) don't tell anybody I told my age!! Enough sharing for tonight. Country Blessings, Marilyn~at Heritage Hill Homestead
