Heritage Hill Homestead

Brrrrrrrrrrrr!

I know I have said this before, but it is really wintery this week, not forecast to get above freezing now until a week from today!  I know we need cold and snow, but it sure is not much fun if you have to be out in it much.  I have lived my entire life in Kansas, so should be used to the weather here........whatever that means as it does change as often as the wind.

Lost the young Tom turkey overnight.  Dh noticed he seemed to have a hurt foot late afternoon, so I suppose he did not fly up to roost in the rafters of the barn as usual.  One of the barn checks he was laying on the ground in the corner of one of the stalls, I thought that a little unusual, but??  This morning he was on his side and gone, I really think that the big buck probably laid on him.  Sad.  We also lost a duck last fall the same way.  The barn is a warm place these days, all the birds that used to roost outside have now moved in, but it can be dangerous for them.

No new babies yet. Last night was the first night for regular checks.  Midnight, 3, and 6.  Made me wish for a nap today!  The due date I have down for a couple of the girls is actually tomorrow, so that might be the magic day.  Lilly and  Star are the 3rd, and Bambi the 8th, then Nutmeg the 14th.  But then there are Cinnamon, Daisy, Holly and Robin that are real close too and I don't have a due date for them. 

A friend and her daughter came over for a visit this afternoon and checked out all the animals.  They want to get a goat for 4-H this year.  I found out they are homeschooling and that reminded me of so many on here.  I told her about this friendly spot and hope she will join us!

I had been thinking that turkey and dressing sounded so good.  So last evening I got out one of our chickens to thaw, baked it for lunch along with dressing, mashed taters and gravy, home canned green beans.  I had about 10 little and I do mean little sweet potatoes left from the garden, so also fixed them to get them used up.  Delicious meal if I do say so myself.
