Why Eat Organic?

Hello,

After posting my banana bread recipe, I got to thinking.  I don't want anyone to get the wrong idea.  I'm not some 'all-natural hickory nut.'  I used to eat organically many years ago, even vegan.  Then I got away from it.  I'm sad to say I needed convenience more than I needed good nutrition.   Since retirement, along with having more time on my hands, I find I am moving back into organics.

We have used whole grains, avoided white sugar, etc. for many years so organics are not really something new to us.  However, we have come to a way of thinking that aligns with God's Holy Word.  If the Holy Spirit resides within us and our body is His temple, would He want garbage going in?  No more than He would want us taking in garbage through our eyes or ears.   I had to rethink this many years ago when I had a reaction to Nutri-sweet; a deadly poision.  Do some research on the internet.  I was having a racing heart and an erratic heartbeat.  I started eliminating different elements from my diet.  When Nutri-sweet was eliminated all my symptoms went away.  Have you ever read the labels on foods and seen how many things it is in?  Most of Europe has banned it.  What do they know that the American public does not know?  Carrying our food choices further is just an extension of our faith.  Don't get me wrong.  I am not the food police    but try to make good choices.  And I fail, sometimes miserabaly.  Do any of you have some suggestions on how to eat  a healthier diet that have worked for you?  I'm open to suggestions.  Thanks!

Your Sis in Christ,

Lori

I have been trying to eat less processed food, more local food, and choose organic when it is available or I can afford it.When you read the stuff I have been reading about the nasty things being done to our food supply you really want to make the change to a more natural diet for sure!

I 'm also shocked sometimes after reading ingredient labels. It's amazing how the food industry can take a seemingly simple food or recipe and add twelve things you can't pronounce and come out with a comparable product to what is homemade. I think that is the key to safe food these days: homemade.

A couple years ago, I bought a Nutri-Mill, and I now grind all my own grain. So I make my bread and most of my baked goods from freshly-milled whole wheat flour. There are some things, though, that my husband prefers with white flour (like pie crust and chocolate chip cookies), so I will buy unbleached white flour occasionally. I use local honey or Sucanat as my sweetener...although, of course, I have to use regular sugar for cookies, per my husband's request.

We grow our own garden and eat lots of salads. We have 19 fruit trees in our back yard, so we have lots of fruit available to us.

I don't have a total handle on this issue, though. I DO LOVE potato chips and French fries, although I know that fried food is horribly unhealthy. However, those foods (are they really foods?) aren't a part of my everyday life..

There is a great scripture passage that I have memorized and will call to memory when I am shopping. Most times it will keep me from buying something I shouldn't...but not always. I still succumb to processed food on occasion .

Isaiah 55:2a Why spend your money on food that does not give you strength? Why pay for food that does you no good?

And, by the way, Nutrisweet and Aspartame haven't been a part of our lives for YEARS. They have always bothered both my husband and myself, so we don't get near them!

Hope you have a wonderful day!
Patti

Isn't that amazing about the Nutri-Sweet? But then again...it's a chemical - just like a drug.

Thanks for posting about eating healthy. It's such an encouragement for those of us who want to stay on track.

Blessings,
Laurie
