Primitive decor suggestions for my kitchen re-decorating/re-modeling project, please read and comment.

I have been thinking about what I want to do with my kitchen.. well actually my whole house is due for a makeover.. and I LOVE primitive decor. I decided to start in my kitchen as it is relatively small and shouldn't be too overwhelming to do. I have looked at alot of the primitive home decor items, but I don't think I have ever actually seen a home decorated this way. I need suggestions from you dear bloggers.
One of the main things I want to do is change my cabinets. They are fake wood grained and it will not bother me a bit to paint them. What color? I was thinking black at first, with some subtle sanding in areas to make it look worn, but I am wondering if that would be too dark.. but at the same time, I could paint my walls a light tan/cream or something to offset the darkness of the cabinets.
I collect Longaberger baskets and also the pottery in Sage (green), Paprika (reddish) and Butternut (yellow). hehe I couldn't decide on just one color. =P
My kitchen table is round, with drop down leaves on two sides.. it is a light wood, but again, it wouldn't break my heart to paint it either. Should I paint it to match the cabinets? Black? Or do a different color?
My appliances are mismatched... stove and fridge are white, microwave is black. My coffee pot and toaster are stainless and black.. grrr. They sit on the counter tops.. but I might be able to find a place to 'hide' the toaster if I need to.
I have one window over my double stainless sink.
I'm trying to think if there is anything else that might be pertinent. I could always take some pictures and post them maybe.. if I can get my camera to work again. =(
I welcome any and all suggestions you have for my kitchen.. colors, items, links to items.. decorating websites.. whatever.. bring it on!!
I am very excited and hope this gets a good bit of response.
Blessings to you!!! And thank you in advance!
Fireproof the movie.. a MUST see!

Hubby and I were at Blockbuster the other day and we were looking through all the $5 movies. I came across Fireproof. I had never seen it, but had heard it was really good. I think Kaitlyn may have even recommended it to me. So we bought it. I watched it last night.. and oh man was it ever awesome!! I have to say, Kirk Cameron's acting abilities leave a little to be desired, but the overall story line was incredible. I didn't realize when we bought it that it was Christian based or what the story was even about.. I am so glad we got it.
I cried at several different places.. but I am such an emotional person when I watch emotional movies. It was a very touching and uplifting movie.. if you haven't seen it, look into it.. you won't be sorry.
What are some other Christian based, present day movies you can recommend? I would love to have a list!!
Blessings to all!!
Dealing with Moles in the Garden
Posted on 2009-Jul-5 at 12:39 by Crystal Miller - 1 Comments - Post Comment - Link
Moles are such a huge nuisance in my garden. They dig tunnels all through and wreak havoc with my veggies, uprooting them and such. The watering we do sometimes ends up down the mole hole instead of the plant roots. I was getting very tired of fighting them for another year. So I started doing a little research on how to get them out of my garden. Poison was my first thought.. but I didn’t want that stuff in my garden. Traps are effective but expensive. So I looked for more affordable remedies. I came up with one that is easy to do. You make a mixture of castor oil and Joy dish soap (2:1 ratio). You add a few tablespoons of this mixture to a gallon of water and pour it down their holes.
I have been doing this with some success. The reason it can work is that moles have a heightened sense of smell and can’t stand the smell of castor oil. They also don’t like the feel of it on them. After a couple of applications some of the holes were not bothered any more but I still had some. So the next time I put in more of the castor oil mix into my gallon of water and made the applications a little stronger. I had been using 2 to 3T tablespoons per gallon.. so I doubled that. Well I am happy to say that yesterday while in the garden I saw that all my mole holes had not been disturbed again.. so success maybe? We will see.
If my pesky mole just makes holes in other areas of the garden I will try another solution I read the other day and that is bubble gum. You drop pieces of bubble gum (or Juicy Fruit I also read they like) into their holes. The reviews I read said this was effective and will end the problem permanently! I guess their digestive systems can’t handle gum.. they are eaters not chewers.. haa.. haa. So if castor oil does not solve the problem.. I will try bubble gum.
Just thought I would share this bit of mole info for anyone else battling them in their gardens this summer..
Amish Vanilla Pudding Friendship Bread with Starter
Posted on Sunday, July 5 at 11:30 by Jennifer - 1 Comments - Post Comment - Link

I recently bought a loaf of homemade friendship bread at a local market. I had never had any before, but this was DELICIOUS! Lucky for me it had a label with all the ingredients on it, so I decided to try to find a recipe that included all of the listed ingredients. One item was instant vanilla pudding, so this made my search much easier. I found several that would probably be pretty much the same, but picked this one to try mainly because it had the starter recipe along with it.
Starter
Day 1:
2 cups flour
1 cup warm water
1/4 ounce dry yeast
Stir the ingredients together well in a large bowl. Cover lightly with plastic wrap and let sit for 24 hours.
Day 2:
1 cup milk
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup all-purpose flour
Add to Day 1 mixture, and stir well. Cover lightly with plastic wrap.
Day 3, 4 and 5: Stir.
Day 6:
1 cup milk
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup all-purpose flour
Add to previous mixture; stir well.
Day 7, 8 and 9: Stir.
Day 10:
1 cup milk
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup all-purpose flour
Add and stir well.
Fill 3 containers with 1 cup of starter. Give two of the containers away (along with the recipes). Store the remaining container in the refrigerator. This will leave enough starter to make the bread. To keep the starter going, start the process over at the step for day two. Use the container you saved in the refrigerator as the step for day one.
Vanilla Pudding Friendship Bread
1 cup starter
1 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup milk
3 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup granulated sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup chopped nuts (optional)
1 large box instant vanilla pudding
Mix the starter, vegetable oil, milk, eggs and vanilla extract.
In another bowl, mix the flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, salt, baking soda, nuts and vanilla pudding. Combine the two mixtures together and stir well. Pour into two large, well greased and sugared loaf pans. Bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour.

up one morning and couldn"t hear ,it was quite around here for a few days ,except when I had to yell at him or write a note Thank-you for for your prayers. Being he is on a lot of medication it was a concern but after 3 days he just needed his ears washed out at the hospital. Yesterday Rob and his wife Judy took us to a museum on dinosours I like them and they looked so real and then to lunch, It was a change. After we arrived home their daughter phoned for us to take her to the stables so she could ride her horse as she is getting ready for compitations. Because we are older it is always nice to be needed and to be a part of their lives..We are using our geen onions and my flowers are coming along. we have had rain off and on. Oh at the museum there was pictures of sand cranes with the red head I had never seen any but they tell me they come in flocks as they fly north and others have seen them. I looked up Mud Hens and it showed a bird that I didn't know and tjhen by putting the name mud hen crane I eventully saw the brown long legged brown bird Maybe it has a more elabrate name that I don't know, God bless Take care Lorena.

"Megan" the new horse!

Megan has arrived, and I have a very, very happy little girl! I have already posted the photos on Facebook, so I am providing a link for anyone to be able to see them. She has been happy all week, riding her up and down our country road, and she even set up a small jump and has been practicing with Megan going over that. Megan is completely content in the pasture, eating grass, and looking so picturesque! There is something about a horse grazing in the field that is very gentle and peaceful. We are all glad Megan has joined the family!

A Prayer for Fourth of July
Posted on Friday, July 3, 2009 at 04:59 by Sandra - 0 Comments - Post Comment - Link
In case I don't get a chance to log on any more today or tomorrow I want to share this prayer that I picked up at the Religious Education Congress this past March. It was given out by Our Sunday Visitor. And I think it is appropriate as we celebrate the Fourth of July.
A Prayer For Our Nation
Gracious and loving God, we come to you in humble prayer for the United States of America.
Bless our President. Give him wisdom and strength to serve the American people and lead our country in ways that are pleasing to you.
Bless our Congress. Instill in them knowledge and understanding to enact laws that protect the sanctity of life -- from the unborn to the elderly; and promote the good of all people.
Bless the people of the United States. Make us aware of our responsibility as citizens to uphold the principles of life, liberty, justice, and equality.
Send your Holy Spirit upon our beloved country. Make us people of faith in time of uncertainty. Make us people of hope in times of trouble. Make us people of compassion with those who are less fortunate. Make us people of peace in our homes, our communities, our country, and our world.
We ask this through Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Savior.
Amen.
God bless, and Happy Forth of July to Everyone
Sandra
Fourth of July Plans & Menu
Posted on Friday, July 3, 2009 at 04:23 by blessed mom - 2 Comments - Post Comment - Link
I have been planning our weekend. Tomorrow we will enjoy a quiet day at home.. just family ( all 12 of us!). We always enjoy a special meal on America's B-day.. so this year I will be making grilled steaks ( a rare treat) , baked potatoes, homemade baked beans, watermelon & homemade apple pie! It's not the fourth w/ out homemade apple pie!
Sunday our Church is holding an evening meeting and then a potluck meal. I'll be brining watermelon, lemon meringue pies and spinach salad. The girls are making cookies & cupcakes. We are also going to bring a pinata & water balloons! It should be a fun evening!
Fourth of July is one of our favorite holidays! We sure enjoy celebrating and taking time to remember how blessed we are in this land of the brave and home of the free! I am also thankful for the freedom and perfect law of liberty thru Christ our Lord ! Jesus died so ALL men could be set free! How grateful I am for that! We are no longer under the bondage of the law -- but are free thru the grace and liberty in Christ! Thank you Jesus for your precious blood shed on calvary so all men can be free!
Hope you all enjoy a blessed Holiday!

Summer Vacation is on.
Posted on Friday, July 3, 2009 at 04:08 by Schatzi - 1 Comments - Post Comment - Link
Well, our summer is underway and I'm already tired. It might just be the heat. Today it's 33 degrees Celsius. Thankful the pool is warm as I've been swimming a bit. I'm not complaining that's for sure because we get enough rain and cold in the winter so this is awesome weather we are having right now.
My favourite fruit is in season right now and we are enjoying an abundance of "raspberries". Yum. I have made raspberry cheesecake...raspberry viniagrette...raspberries and cream...just plain raspberries...raspberry shortcake...you get the picture. Plus, I put 40 pounds in the freezer to make raspberry jelly later. I am not doing much this summer...I am still working on this "tennis elbow" thing and so any amount of work causes pain...and trying to use my left hand for everything is also difficult....so I am taking it easy this summer and just sitting around doing only what absolutely needs doing...and with five kids still home, that's busy enough.
We took the kids to the ocean and for ice-cream...and now Anika says she has touched her feet in the North Atlantic Ocan and now the Pacific Ocean..it was exciting, not to mention we all had our favourite ice-cream...mine is "tiger"...delicious! The tide was out so we were able to walk quite a ways out.

Dh and I also made our first "beer can chicken"...or others call it, "beer up the butt" chicken. It turned out amazing. Next time though we will leave in on the barbeque 1/2 hour longer..but the flavour was unbelievable. I went on the internet to look up recipes and there were hundreds of them, so dh and I just came up with our own rub and everyone loved it.

The boys got the go-kart out from the garage and pumped up the tires washed it and even got it started on their own. Last year they couldn't really touch the peddles very easily but this year well.....my boys are growing up too quickly for "this mama"....but it was fun watching them tearing around the grapes and through the long grass. They had a blast....so did dad!!!!

We are reading Daniel Boone right now...and because the weather was so great today we took our blankets and I read to the kids under the big tree in the back yard...I sat in our wonderful Muskoka chair and the kids laid on the blankets...it was fun. I finally got a sore throat from reading so we all laid on the blankets while the kids talked about all kinds of things...we all told story after story until I got a whopper of a headache...so Anika decided to massage my head so I wouldn't go inside...she loves listening to my stories...she even braided my hair. It was a fun afternoon. Of course every once in a while the wind would blow a certain way and it was "chicken poo smell" everywhere....then thankfully the wind would shift and it was beautiful trees and grass smell. Oh the joys of living in the country. God is so good!
Our cherry tree is producing lots of fruit this year...but unfortunately the birds are getting more than we are. Any ideas how to keep the crows away?

Well, that about sums up our past week....looking forward to the weekend.
Happy "4th of July to all my US blogging friends
and
Happy Birthday to my sister!
