The girls and I were admiring our rich black soil today. We are well pleased with the lasagna garden results. All the manure, moldy hay, straw, grass clippings, leaves, newspaper, barn litter, etc... turned in to beautiful, brown, crumbly soil. This year we are working quite so hard as last year to collect all the layers. The base is good so it isn't as critical as it was last year.
I worked the first two beds and planted them a week ago. I stirred up the soil and added some stuff on top and planted. All the little seedlings are up already. The second couple of beds we worked on today. I decided to do it differently. I pulled back all that rich brown stuff and laid down a few inches of rabbit barn bedding and manure, a thick layer of leaves and grass clippings and then brought our nice soil back over the top, added some gypsum and planted. The girls helped me a lot.
Since we no longer have a pickup truck or a horse I have to make do with the leaves and grass and compost that we have right here on our property. I wouldn't mind a load or two of straw or moldy hay, but I am thinking it isn't going to make a huge difference because we used so much of it last year. I haven't even bought any bales of peat, yet, either. I might need to for the lower garden.
I had good help. Christina mowed the grass in so we could have the clippings.
Vanessa helped me move the soil.
Brianna is the one who takes the pictures.... but she cleaned out the rabbit barn so I could have manure.
Holly was no help at all. She was downright lazy.
Looks Great!

There is something about good, rich soil that is so appealing!
Oh how wonderful!! I read about lasagna gardening, but we opted for the old fashioned till method.... and now I am regretting it as our soil has so much clay and really need amending... maybe next year we will do the lasagna gardening. It sounds facinating to me! I wish you much success in your garden endeavors!
Blessings,
