It's Raining, It's Pouring, and We are sick and tired of it!!!!

in Africa Trip - Post Comment

It’s pouring rain…rain like you can’t believe. Our friends are telling us that it’s raining at home, but you can’t imagine rain until you have seen this.

Cindy, Teresa, Kristen and I, along with a few girls headed to the duka in Mago this morning in the bright sunshine thinking to find a kanga or two, but there weren’t any, so some of us decided to walk to Lupalilo to check out the three dukas there.  Kristen walked back with Kenzie and Beth and borrowed mom’s car to pick us up. We enjoyed the walk, but we were hot. None of the dukas had what we were after, but I did find a nice shawl and we bought tomatoes and onions.  Finally Kristen arrived announcing she was our “knight in shining white truck”.  We could see an ominous black cloud in the direction of home…. And before we got there it was pouring much to Bethany, Christina and Izzy’s dismay as they were sitting in the back of the truck - drenched to the skin once again!!!! Kristen was doing her very best to stay on the road. Right when we got home the truck nearly slid off the road and there was my mom watching from the door of the church… but we made it!

We had hired a gal to wash clothes this morning so there was our washer woman sitting in the kitchen with her baby - the kitchen full of people trying to work on lunch. The main room is a disaster… wet clothes everywhere, suitcases, chairs, beds…. Since our family doesn’t sleep here except Vanessa there isn’t anywhere that feels like I belong, so I am sitting on Mr.’s bed while Bethany, Brianna and Christina have taken over Vanessa’s bed.

This morning, Bethany’s toe still looked a little puffy. My mom questioned her on how she got the funza out and it seems she broke the sack and got out all the eggs, but not the sack. Mom suggested that she visit Miriam because Miriam would be a lot gentler than she could be. Miriam worked on it until she was satisfied that it was completely cleaned out and I covered it with a charcoal poultice.

Steve and I were talking and we thought Bethany looked like she was trimming down some. I asked her if her pants were feeling a little loose and she looked at me with the funniest look. She said, “My pants USED to fit”.  She actually has been wearing her dresses more than her jeans because nobody likes to scrub jeans by hand – least of all her and me. She decided to try on a pair of size 7s that she said were feeling snug when she left home… they are a couple inches too big now J  No worries, though, she looks good and she isn’t fading by any means, nor is she starving.

Jon is up and around today. We suggested he takes it easy today, but after he did a little accounting he went back to work.

Steve and I really enjoyed our little fire in the fireplace last night. You can only imagine how humid a room is when it is freshly plastered with concrete. We slept pretty well, but we have to get up and get out at 6 am when the fundi’s arrive to start working in our place.

The kids loved hearing from the Morgan kids!!!! Mitchell - Pizza dreams for sure! How did you know? Emily, the girls were so delighted to hear from you!

Just for the record… in case you want to know… Memere is spelled; M-e-m-e-r-e and Pepere is spelled: P-e-p-e-r-e! No “a’s”. LOL, and yes, everyone calls my mom and dad those names with various American accents, sometimes to our amusement.  For those who don’t know, it’s part of our French –Canadian heritage.

Okay... so the washer woman in the kitchen was not "OUR" washer woman. We paid the wrong woman!! Our real washer woman was sitting in Shari's kitchen and she came for her pay after the rain... Oh dear! Sometimes it's hard to tell the people apart until you get to know them.

Thanks for keeping us updated on what's happening there! Time has flown by so swiftly. Hard to believe some of you are soon to be heading home (though a round about way)!

We're looking forward to learning more about what you've experienced there and how God is blessing our outreach in that part of the world!

Have a safe and happy day!
Pastor Jim Anderson
