I admit it. I cannot stand noise. It drives me to distraction and depending on the decible can cause me great pain and migraines. For those who think country living is quiet and peaceful - forget it! It isn't.
In the spring we listen to frost fans for a good many nights. There are an abundance of frost fans in the valley close to our hill so that our bedroom can sound like a helicopter pad during a landing. Sometimes it lasts all night. Sometimes we get a few quiet hours to be shattered by the roar at about 3 or 4 AM. This year was a record for frost. Farmers were really concerned about losing their orchard crops.
From spring until fall we listen to sprayers. Sometimes the farmer spray all night. Sometimes they sleep for awhile first, but it is daily and it definitely disturbs my sleep regularly. It's kind of a high pitch whine and motor sound combined. This morning we began listening to the sprayers at about 4 AM . Steve is sick and has been resting on and off with a pillow over his head all day. (That wouldn't be because I have been teaching piano lessons this afternoon, would it?) He was not able to go to work today, rather unusual for him.
Today I noticed cherry cannons have been turned on. So, for the next month we get to listen to the sound of cannons at unpredictable intervals. Cherry orchards spread from the edge of our property out into the valley. To top that off, our dear daughter turned on our "bird frightening device" in our cherry trees today, too. It's a cd of preditor bird calls! Red-tailed hawks, owls, eagles, etc... call out from our trees scaring even the cats and chickens into hiding!
Oh, and one more thing. Sometimes we get to listen to the orchard worker's full blast radio music. They love to listen to Mexican music while they thin and sucker and pick fruit. Considering what kind of music they could be listening to, we don't mind this.
Did I mention my three girls play flute, piano, harp, and violin? Ah, yes. Some good sounds. Some unavoidable sounds. Some country sounds...
I wonder what a whole night of no sound would be like?
oh dear.... I was just remarking to dh last night how I love the sound of a country sauranade - crickets!

Sounds like living in the country, in this instance, isn't any quiter than living in town!! So sorry.
We currently have a fan blowing in our room for some "white noise", and a Christian CD that plays all night. We aren't awaken by three wheelers (the neighbors are teenagers), or the train that comes through town anymore.
