A Simple Life

I have made it a goal to find ways to live a more "simple" life.  In this fast pace life, urban surroundings and worldly influences, I am finding this goal to be most challenging.  Good thing I love challenges!  I was born and raised in MT and there we have a lot of Hooderite Colonies.  I was always fascinated with them, and we had a family of friends that were welcome guests in one of the colonies.  They would tell us of their adventures when they would go there.  Time would stand still, everyone was family, simplicity was their way of life.  I tried to google "hooderite" but I got nothing, and I don't know what the similarities or differences are between them and Amish, but I love to read about the Amish.  My secret wish is that I were born Amish, however, my Heavenly Father does not make mistakes.  I was born "english".   There is a lot I can learn from these "simpler" ways, and apply them to my life.  The stories our friends told us have stuck with me, and placed in my heart a desire to live more simply.  I reciently bought a devotional by Wanda E. Brunstetter called, "Simple Life...Devotional thoughts from Amish Country" and it is so neat.  For a moment my world slows down as I read a story (lesson), and every devotional ends with a delicous Amish recipe. 

I hope I am not offending anyone, as I know there are Amish folks on the homestead, but just want to say that I have such a desire to learn from a simple life.  A life closer to the way God designed us, quiet and peaceful without all the "stuff" and distractions this world offers.  Anyhow just wanted to share my thoughts.

I love to read about the Amish and Mennonites and their habits and practices. Like you, I like to read Wanda Brunstetter's books and those by Beverly Lewis. If you change your spelling to "Hutterites", your Google search should work better. :) Please post your results. It will be an interesting topic. First of all I woudnt think you were offending anyone to say that you would love to live as them. If someone said that about me, first I would ask them why, LOL, but I would in no way be offended, I would actually find it a little flattering. Anyway I too have a secret desire to live as the Amish live. I wish I would live a simpiler life style. I try my hardest to do that, but find that when something happens, as now my car is not feeling well, I do miss it. I wish I werent so attached to things such as that.
We can only ask God to help us with such things and try our hardest to work it out.

Hi Rossie!

I just wanted to share that I'm also intrigued with the Amish and Mennonites' ways of living simply. (However, I'm mostly just curious about the Amish way of life, since I don't think that I could give up electricity! :> )
However, I do desire to live more simply, and homeschooling is one of the blessings that allows our family to do that (as you know!) We keep our schedule very low key regarding outside activities and I am so thankful not to be tied down to so many of the commitments out there waiting to take away from family time! I've struggled ALOT with guilt about "having", however, everything that I have I know is God's and I also know that if it was taken away, all that I need is God, so that gives me peace.

" ...for I have learned to be content in any and every situation, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do everything through him who gives me strength."
