Homestead Haven Beginnings

The way I was raised...

{ 07:34, Saturday, July 8, 2006 } { Posted in Keeping home } { 7 comments } { Link }

Okay, who ever said that we are not a product of our raising?  That we make our own choices and decisions, and make ourselves what we are, and that our parents should not be held responsible for our adult actions...was that me???  Did I really say that???  Ugh...here's my mouth, insert foot!!!!

I have been devestated by my childhood raising, and now I am getting greif from DH.  Let me explain...growing up my step dad was a butcher, and as his children we were learning this trade.  Skinning deer, and chopping up cow.  Putting all the meat through the grinder and such.  At that time I was not aware of the long term effect this would have on my life!!

Meatloaf was on my menu last week and I was going about my business of preparation when in walks DH and starts a howlin'...Why, you might ask????  Because I am mixing the meat with my hands, and I am wearing my yellow rubber gloves while doing so.  I told him that everyone uses rubber gloves while mixing this bloody, cold and slimey cow flesh!  After quite sometime of trying to convince him that others do the same thing to no avail, I took another approach.  Duh...I have been scarred by my childhood raising!!!!!!!!!!!!!  My dad was a butcher, and made me touch nasty meat every day of my life, and now I am reaping the consequences, it is hardly my fault, right!!!???  He left the kitchen mumbling something about, "Oh yeah, every homesteader wears dish gloves while touching their meat."  Humph...everyone has flaws!!!

What's your flaw?  Please post it so I can feel a little redeemed!

Blessings, Rossie

But my DH will be greatly pleased to see there is someone else that does the same thing. I wear gloves for lamost everything. I am not a germ-a-phobe. I absolutley hate the texture of some meat and other things. And I found that I can use gloves and enjoy my dinner when it is ready. LOL!!!
I enjoyed your story. Have a wonderful weekend!

Never thought of that

Can't say I ever wore gloves to mix my meatloaf. I grew up watching my mother mix hers with her hands and so I always did, too. Until, that is, I got my Bosch mixer! One day I decided to mix it in the mixer and it works great! No more messy hands! I would love your recipe, have you posted it before?

Chickens

When I first got married, 18 years ago, I hated touching any meat. The first time I bought a whole chicken to cook, I grabbed it by the legs and shook it until the gizzard pack fell out!

On a non-food subject, I had a step-mother who made housecleaning a nightmare for me and as a result of that upbringing, I resented any request to do anything...you can imagine the squabbles over that!

I have, since then, decided that even though she was wicked, I AM in control of my life now (except when I let God be the Boss, which is infinately better) and I DO clean my house (usually) with cheer and a willing heart. :)

Thanks for sharing your story!

Rossie -
LOL!! I can just see the yellow rubber gloves up to your elbows mixing that meat loaf!!!
Like Patti - mine is whole chicken - don't know why, I cannot touch them - I used to buy whole chickens when my husband was alive - he would do anything to it that needed to be done - I would do the same thing - grab it by the legs and shake until everything fell out!!!!!
Now I just buy chicken breats - I can handle those!!!
Love your blog!!
Bless....

Many flaws

{ 04:53, Monday, July 10, 2006 } { Posted by Patti }
I have many flaws, far too many to list. At least you are making a meatloaf...my sweet son begs almost weekly for me to make my meatloaf...but I don't like the flavor of the beef from the supermarket so I haven't made one for awhile. I am going to look in to getting some local beef, with the hopes that it won't be as bad tasting (the real problem is that my parents, who still live in Montana, used to raise 3 or 4 cows for beef for themselves and us and some friends. Their beef was wonderful, and I knew it was hormone and steroid-free. Anyhow, they stopped doing this about 2 years ago because their pasture needed a break. Since then, our family has been struggling to find good beef)
So, at least you are making meatloaf, even with rubber gloves, that is better than what I am doing.

my husband's two least favorite.....

I drive my husband crazy when I chew ice and twist my hair, sometimes both at once. Have you met Darcy? She is a new blogger who lists her address as NW Montana. I guess you can click on her name on my friends list if you'd like to say hello.
