The year of the Pig
Ok, I know I've talked about whether or not to get a pig or a milk goat
this year. Well, I did some totally random research, and came up
with the following:
2007 is the Chinese year of the pig.
Hey, who am I to argue with 3000 years of tradition? So, I'm
planning on getting pigs this year. This, of course, means
fencing, shelter, and feed for the pigs. I'm planning on getting
three of 'em. I figure one would almost pay for the other two at
"harvest" time. One for the freezer, and maybe one to keep as a
breeding sow. I have to do a ton of research, and find local like
minded (read, organic or natural,) farmers who raise pigs. Need
to get the Storey book on them. Also have to read about them in
the books I already have (I think six or so cover some basics on pigs.)
Anyone here ever had pigs? What can you tell me? Any tricks
or secrets you haven't seen in print? Mine will be pastured at
the edge of my swamp. I should explain my swamp, I'll do that
soon. I want to grow much of my own food for them. Of
course, they will eat all kitchen scraps. Plus, I will have a ton
of J. Chokes by late fall.
You never know though, things could change, depending on the
situation. "If you want to see God laugh tell him your
plans..." Might get too good a deal on a goat, or not be able to
find local pigs that suit me and my requirements... You never
know.
I know I won't wait until the year of the goat to get my milk goat, and
I think next year is the year of the rat. Don't want no rats,
already got too many...
Live well,
Raymond
