• Thursday, June 8, 2006 - Dew Claws or not dew claws...

Posted in Puppy Love
that is the question!  We’ve been discussing this on our forum for a bit and the general consensus seems to be that it is not totally necessary to remove puppies dew claws.  It is a good precaution to take though.  It seems that these little extra claws, can easily get caught on something and rip, causing pain.  Also for breeds with bulgy eyes, like Pinky the pug, Boston Terriers, and such, it's a good idea because when they rub their eyes with the side of the paw, they could hurt themselves.

Because the process is one that is typically done very early in a pup’s life, I emailed my breeder to find out how she feels about dew claws.  She said that she does remove them, at about 1 week of age. Great!  One less thing for me to have to think about!  She also sent me an updated picture of my pinky - who is all of 1.5 weeks old today!  hehe

Dewclaws should be removed on a puppy at that early age (1 week or less) ... it's just a clip and a little bit of blood stopper - they squeal more because they are being confined. We had a German Shepherd cross that hadn't had them done and we were in terror about her catching them, as they were so loose and floppy.

We raised Shetland Sheepdogs and Schipperkes for show and it was required for those breeds. It's easy -I held (turned my head) and Norm clipped. They forgot the 'pain' in less than 30 seconds... no squealing when they were put back with Mommy.

This should be done!
