Other people have said it better, but I do want discuss this issue, and point out that the possibility of a system such as the USDA's National Animal Identification System is a threat to a way of life traditional in this country since Europeans landed.  Many people have replied to my concerns with the comment, "It's impossible to enforce, so it will never happen here."  This may be true, but the cost to taxpayers, society and the small farmer's way of life while a cumbersome Federal agency comes to the same realization may be greater than I personally want to risk.

Inform yourself.  Visit No NAIS and similar sites and follow the links and see what is really going on.  Vist the USDA NAIS site and pay particular attention to the FAQ section; it is enlightening.  Then, if you feel that this program will be detrimental to small farmers, homesteaders, horse owners, feed store owners,  the backyard flock, and countless animal owners in every strata of society, start writing letters to your representatives, sign petitions, and spread the word!

Yes, yes, yes - please continue to post about this - I've already composed an email and sent to everyone in my email address book with specific web sites and "what to do's" listed as well as requesting that it be forwarded to everyone and everyone. Email jokes zip around this globe in 24 hours - surely we can raise the roof with this too!

I am writing one massive letter to fax to (yes) the Presideint, the Sec. of Agriculture, my Congressman, Senators, our Governor, state Comm. of Ag., state rep and senators as well as cc'ing media contacts and going to Fax it - personally I believe it all too easy for our elected officials to delete emails and a faxed letter, in my experience, has gotten more attention.
