I suppose I should explain myself a little, although there is lots of information about me on both my web page and the other blog. I was born and raised in Southwestern Virginia, in the little community where I now live, and on the same farm where I'm making a living. I don't think I'm really a homesteader, and the simple life I live is nothing more than the way of life that my family has known for generations. I'm introverted by nature, although I've learned to enjoy people and have a knack for selling things. Making things is also in my nature, as well as a love of working with animals. I love plants and gardening, derived from a childhood spent with grandparents that just assumed having a garden was a natural part of life. I also have a little knack for writing and for fooling with the computer. All these things have brought me to a lifestyle that would probably be considered simple by some, although there isn't much simple about juggling all the ways and means of making a living on your own! Bird Feeders in the Old Apple Tree There are compensations, though, despite the work, which is satisfying in itself. I can pause in a busy day and sit by the window, crocheting and watching the birds as they squabble and dart around the feeders while the sun shines and a cold wind rustles the ivy on the walls. I can indulge a spoiled spaniel and a young puppy as they play at my feet while I work at the computer, and take a break to let them out for a game of tag in the yard. I can shear a placid German Angora in the old barn while the rabbits munch their hay and I look out over the changing fields and seasons. Some people chose their way of life; others seem to have it pushed upon them. I've done things that were more important with far greater financial rewards, but somehow just working here is the right thing to do. Being who you are meant to be seems to be hard in this world; I'm lucky to have found my place in it. |
