There's so much going on....

I don't know where to start!

I guess I will start with my first "farm critters."  I am attempting to incubate some chicken eggs, then turkey eggs.  My incubator was just going to be a $20 used bator, but ended up with the turbo fan, the egg turner, digital thermometer, etc.  In just one month, I have learned:  price your farm project, then multiply by 5.  This is your estimated cost.

I should be receiving my eggs by February 25th I think, so hopefully I will get everything regulated by then... I'm having problems with the humidity being to low.   Still trying to make adjustments...

If the humidity is too low, the peeps stick to the eggshell and die because they can't get out; if it's too high, you get "mushy chicks." I don't exactly know what that is... but I don't want to find out!

My next projects will be the brooder (if anything hatches!) and a kid house.  For goat kids.  I have a plan that uses one sheet (4' X 8') of half inch plywood.  It will shaped liked a teepee and have a space at the top for a heat lamp.    I bought a Nubian doe kid on an auction, that will be born in May or June, and then have a farm in Manhattan, KS, that I plan to buy my Oberhasli doe kid from.   I already have two blue goat halters!  LOL... Just to make them seem real.

I can still hardly believe that I will have a farm.  Will have.  Because it will be spring before we get moved out there.  But the chickies will help me to be a little more patient.   At least I have something "farm" to do!

Well, my first entry in my first blog...  that was fun!

I am just a little furthur along than you are in getting my farm going, it is so fun! We bought our 10 acres 3 and a half years ago . The first year we got 25 chicks from Mcmurray Hatchery., 4 ducks and 5 turkeys from our feed store. We now have 35 chickens, and 4 ducks, 4 dogs and 7 cats and I am so excited that we are getting 2 goat kids and one lamb and one 1 yr old sheep wether this spring. Yes there is so much to do! We have to get the pasture fenced and the barn cleaned out and put stalls in , etc, etc, etc,. It is so exciting isn't it! I named our little farm Still Meadow Farm, My Mom had read a book by that title and named her 3 acres that , she couldn't keep her dream long though and we left it when I was 8. It was in my blood and I have never been back to it until we moved here. I never heard an owl except for on my Mom's farm and my farm that ties them togehter in my mind as both very special places! I have a very understanding husband who loves me very much , he doen't like the farm thing but helps me where he is willing and lets me do my thing! My dd seems to have a heart for it and my ds to a certain degree! If you need help with chicken questions I would love to share my mistakes so you don't do them! Looks like we will be learning goats togehter! I will add you to my friends list ! Happy homesteading to be!
