To Early

Posted by Isabella

Hello Everyone. I hope everyone is cozy and asleep. lol. DS is getting up at 3am most mornings. Not really up, more like crying a little and going back to sleep. Any suggestions would help. I check on him and he is back to sleep most nights.

The other night I was sleeping away. I was dreaming of shopping at CVS. I was comparing prizes of pencils. Over the intercom, my ds's voice tells me, "Mommy, I done sleeping now." I am still dreaming but I know the voice isn't right. Something isn't right. DS is suppose to be home asleep because I was shopping by myself. I quickly wake up and my ds is standing beside my bed telling me that he was done sleeping. It was 3 in the morning. Anyhow, I explained to him that it was night time and he had to go back to bed. Cute child. Love him. Hope everyone has a blessed, sleepful night. I

Odds n' ends

"I will turn him into a duck!  Yes!  Yes!  It's so evil.  Oh wait...  I don't know how to do that.  And I don't really need a duck.  Hmm.  This is going to be harder than I thought."  - Bowler Hat Guy

Bowler Hat Guy is the funniest cartoon villian I've seen in a long time.  That's not saying much since I don't watch a lot of movies, but ya know.  We don't watch TV here, but we watch some movies.  Bobby rents or borrows them from time to time and the other day we watched "Meet The Robinsons" for the second time.  I really enjoy it.  I laughed out loud. It's not spirtually uplifting or anything, but for sheer entertainment it was refreshingly clean.  There are some problems with the time travel details, but there always are.

My kids are always the best entertainment, though.  Seth is just at the age where he's really expressing his thoughts... and he has a lot of thoughts.  And questions.  He's not chatty like some kids, but he talks more than the older two.  I don't know if they talked as much when they were 5, but he out-does them nowadays.  With our van down we're driving the neighbor's little truck everywhere and Bobby and I take turns brining one child at a time with us on errands.  It's been awhile since I went out with Seth alone.  He talked a lot.  He wondered a lot.  "I wonder if they have to walk when they paint the lines on the road."  "I wonder why my seat belt snaps in here instead of here."  "I wonder how they paint the lines on the curves."  Too many "wonderings" to name.  He's something!  I hear it around the house a lot, but got a concentrated dose that day.  I love it.

Tonight at dinner we had pot roast with carrots & taters and gravy.  I usually bake biscuits to go with it.  I peeked in the oven and realized I'd forgotten to add the baking powder.  Again.  The kids insisted they'd eat them anyway so we served them, but not before I whipped up a correct batch and put them in the oven.  They were done halfway through dinner and when I set them on the table Seth said he wanted want of them.  "They smell better because they're overcooked," he said.
Mere minutes later he confessed he couldn't eat his beef, which everyone else raved about because it came out so tender.  "I like it," said he, "but it's too tender."

In other news, it's been 15 days since we dropped the van off at the mechanic and we'd heard nothing until yesterday when Bobby happened to be out that way.  They've fixed it and we only owe $60.  Yay!  Sounding like it involved the transmission I was afraid it was going to cost way more.  Unfortunately, every penny right now is going toward bills.  Bobby has been looking for work and unable to find anything but an odd job here and there.  Small odd jobs.   Even the factories have long waiting lists for hiring.  Slim pickin's these days.  But our Father knows all our needs.

The good news is that Bobby is getting a lot more done around here!  Two days ago he got the woodstove hooked up and we've been using it.  It's not running it's best because it needs a new catalytic combustor ($60 to get an absolute low-end one that will get us through the winter).  Well, it needs a new one and we suspect that's why it's not burning as well.  We're also experimenting with our variety of wood, trying to burn only the seasoned stuff but most of it's a little green.  We're mixing it with seasoned slab-wood we got free from a saw mill.  That stuff burns really hot.  Tonight's suppose to be down to 17°... brrrr!  Clear and cold the next few days.  We finally had some propane delivered, so we have the furnace as a back-up.  I sure like burning wood, though.  It's drier, which makes my skin itch terribly, but I love the wood and the smell and how cozy it feels.  I'm thankful.

The Tablecloth

Posted by CitySteader
My grandma sent me this email.  I had heard the story before, but it is so beautiful that I thought others might like to read it too.  Enjoy!

The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned

to their first ministry, to reopen a church

in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October

excited about their opportunities When they saw

their church, it was very run down and needed

much work. They set a goal to have everything

done in time to have their first service

on Christmas Eve.

T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,

painting, etc, and on December 18

were ahead of schedule and just about finished.

On December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving

rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.

O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.

His heart sank when he saw that the roof had

leaked, causing a large area of plaster about

20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall of the

sanctuary just behind the pulpit, beginning about

head high.

T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,

and not knowing what else to do but postpone

the Christmas Eve service, headed home.

On the way he noticed that a local business was

having a flea market type sale for charity so he

stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,

handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth

with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross

embroidered right in the center. It was just

the right size to cover up the hole in the front

wall. He bought it and headed back to the church.

By this time it had started to snow. An older

woman running from the opposite direction was

trying to catch the bus.. She missed it. The pastor

invited her to wait in the warm church for

the next bus 45 minutes later.

She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor

while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put

up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor

could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and

it covered up the entire problem area.

Then he noticed the woman walking down the center

aisle. Her face was like a sheet.. "Pastor,"

she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"

The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check

the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into

it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had

made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria

The woman could hardly believe it as the pastor

told how he had just gotten the Tablecloth. The

woman explained that before the war she and

her husband were well-to-do people in Austria

When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.

Her husband was going to follow her the next week.

He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her

husband or her home again.

T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;

but she made the pastor keep it for the church.

The pastor insisted on driving her home, that

was the least he could do.. She lived on the other

side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn

for the day for a housecleaning job.

What a wonderful service they had on Christmas

Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the

spirit were great. At the end of the service, the

pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door

and many said that they would return.

One older man, whom the pastor recognized

from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the

pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he

wasn't leaving.

The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on

the front wall because it was identical to one

that his wife had made years ago when

they lived in Austria before the war and how

could there be two tablecloths so much alike.

H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he

forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was

supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and

put in a prison.. He never saw his wife or his home

again all the 35 years in between.

The pastor asked him if he would allow him to take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten

Island and to the same house where the pastor

had taken the woman three days earlier.

H e helped the man climb the three flights of

stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on

the door and he saw the greatest Christmas

reunion he could ever imagine.

The Heathens, Umm, I Mean My Chickens

Posted by amanda

That's a catchy title isn't it? Well, that's just what my chickens act like. They have gotten into the habit of running to me when I come outside to feed them as if they were puppies that have been starved to death. I can't even get the food out of the jar and into their bowl fast enough for them. I even have one that flies up while the food is being poured into the bowl, thinking she can get the food faster that way.

I can't keep enough feed in these birds. I thought that it might be because it's been so cold and they need more energy. NOT! These birds are like this ALL of the time. Out of all the breeds we have ever had, these are the most ornery selfish birds we have ever had.

Now, they are they BEST egg layers we have had. So, other than being trampled on by birds during feeding time (and any other time I am outside) I have no reason to complain. They are red stars and also lay BIG brown eggs.

I have 8 Red Stars, 2 Rhode Island Reds, one Black Star and one breed that I can't recall the name of right now. I was getting about 9- 10 eggs a day during the spring and summer. I am now getting about 3-4 a day. I think that's pretty good.

We let then free range during the day by letting them out of their coup at noon. I declare, when I go up there to let them out, they all head straight to the dog's bowl and try and eat his food. Like I said before, these bird are hungry ALL of the time.

Anyway, I just thought that I would share that little bit of info. Does anyone else have chickens that act as strange as mine?

Bless all who pass this way!

How Do Ya'll Like These Falling Gas Prices? Has It Changed Your Spending Habits?

Posted by amanda

Now here's something to be really happy about!

http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/industry_sectors/natural_resources/article5198537.ece-

My $25 gas fund was getting me only half a tank at during the summer months. We didn't go out too often. Now that same $25 is getting me just about a full tank! Yippee! I am now going to try and cut the bill further by using only $15 a week for gas. That should get me about half a tank (what I have been used to for the past several months anyway.). I don't want to think that just because the gas has come down that I should be going out more and ultimately spending more because I am out and about (usually happens that way.) Does that make any sense?

Hubby is still getting at least 40 hours a week. (Praise God!) They have 2 jobs that should last them until the middle of December. He says that there isn't much on the books after that.

We are used to him getting laid off during the winter months anyway. It is usually for about a month starting in Feb. It may be in January now. So no matter what happens, I don't want to get into the habit of going off the budget "just because."

God is good and in control! Praise His name now and forever! Amen!

Bless all who pass this way!

Stuffing recipe

Posted by Morning Sunshine
From my SIL... her ooooohhhh so yummy stuffing recipe.  I have liked this stuffing for years, but this year, we kind of forgot about it, leaving it in the oven a bit too long.  It did not burn, but the top got brown and slightly crispy.  It was sooooo much better than other years.  Now, we usually triple this for our family of 18 (and growing).  It think I will double it for my family's Thanksgiving coming up next week.

Stuffing

3/4 cup onion, chopped finely
1 1/2 cups celery stalks and leaves, chopped finely
1 cup butter
9 cups french bread cubes
2 tsp. salt
1 1/2 tsp. crushed sage leaves (I use 1 tsp. rubbed sage)
1 tsp. thyme
1/2 tsp. pepper
1 cup chicken stock
about 1/3 can of evaporated milk

In pan melt butter and add onions and celery.  Cook until tender.  Add seasonings, mix well, then stir in 1/3 of the bread cubes.  Stir mixture well then add the rest of the bread cubes.  Add in the stock and milk to taste.  Bake at 350 until crispy on top!  MMMMM.....

Our Yearly Turkey Hunt- Is It That Time Already?

Posted by amanda

Good Afternoon Family & Friends! It is a COLD day here in NC. We rarely see these kind of temps. this time of year. (did I say that in an ealier post?) If I did, you can really see that I am amazed to see that we are at 43* at 5 in the afternoon in the middle of November. This is usually Jan. or Feb. weather in our neck of ther woods.

Anyway, the kids and I went on our "yearly" turkey hunt today. We started calling it a hunt when my oldest Dd (18) was in the 5th grade. I am always the one who cooks in the family. So it has been up to me to find the biggest turkey to cook for Thanksgiving day. It was dubbed "the hunt" because it usually takes going to 3-4 different stores to find a 23 lb. turkey.

This year, I found what I was looking for at the first store I went to. That was REALLY  nice. The turkey was priced at .57 a lb. That was a really good deal. I had to buy $35 (minus the turkey) to get it at that price, but I had to purchase other sale items anyway, so it worked out really well. I actually got 2 turkeys and plan on going back next week for 2 more to stock the freezer with. Let's just say that this old homesteader is preparing for the winter.

Wal Mart had some good deals this week. Real Land O Lake Butter for $2 a lb. Green Giant corn, beans and peas for .50 a can. So I ended up with 6 lbs. of butter and 30 cans of veggies. I think the butter should last for the next month and a half. The veggies should also last until March or April, with what I already have stored in the freezer. I would love to be able to get enough veggies (canned) to last until July. That's when (prayerfully) the corn and beans we usually plant would be harvested.

I still need to get a better system in figuring out the exact amount of veggies I would need to last from one harvest to another. That really depends on "how the garden grows" though. With the last two years being in a drought, I never know just what I am going to harvest. (thank The Lord for Wally World and veggies on sale at.50 a can!)

I have a busy day ahead of me tomorrow. I am baking bread to sale at the local libray. I also need to get to the library and pick up a book. Then there is still school to do and a house that ALWAYS needs cleaning. (Thank you Lord for all that You allow me to do for my family.)

Well, I need to get off here and get ready for church. At least I don't have to cook tonight. On the way home from "the hunt" we stopped and picked up Chinese to bring home for lunch. They always put way too much in the boxes to eat at one sitting. So hence, it's Chinese for dinner as well!

Have a blessed evening in The Lord!

A pregnancy picture...

Posted by Ashley

I know, I know. I just blogged about being pregnant, right? But it's on my mind lately.

I read up on the differences between false labor and true labor, and found this helpful sentence:

"If you have contractions five minutes apart, lasting at least 60 seconds for one hour (or they continue to get longer or stronger), call your midwife or head to the hospital."

I laughed. The last time I had contractions for an hour, I was holding my Elijah about 20 minutes later. Everyone is different. So far, I have appreciated my fast, intense labors. I'm a fast, intense type of person.

Don't confuse that with painless labor. But if you were to ask me if I wanted 12 hours of easier labor or 7 hours of more intense - I'd say "Let's get it over with!"

Here I am:

It's so much easier to smile at my boys or my Jonathan than a mirror!

Frankly, I don't feel all that different from about a month ago, when this picture was taken:

The scale assures me I'm growing, but I don't really "feel" it. I'm on pins and needles waiting the heavy feeling that will clue me in that I'm close to the end. I do feel "heavier" when I'm fighting gravity to get out of a chair, or when I awaken in the middle of the night to feel my husband's hand gently nudging me back onto my side because I'm on my back like a giant turtle.

Other than that, life goes on, really. I'm pregnant right now, but it won't last. Hopefully, being "un-pregnant" won't last, either.

Yes, I can't help it. I'm weird. I can't help but think about being pregnant again. It's not so much that pregnancy is so incredibly wonderful . . . the akwardness bending over, the decrease in stamina, the inability to get everything done that I want to accomplish . . . the babies at the end of the pregnancies are so incredible.

It's like, why climb a mountain? For the skinned up knees, the bruises, the sore feet? There is something that you want. To see the sunrise, or have the accomplishment of it.

And so I move steadily forward in my journey to meet this next little person. My Little-One-With-Active-Hands. I wonder if this one is a thumb sucker? I tell you, baby must have touched the top of his/her head the other day and that made me JUMP. I'd never felt a hand *there* before!

What memories . . . .

I hope everyone is having a blessed week!

~Ashley~

Wednesday and a pic

Posted by Isabella

Hello everyone. Feeling better today. Ds only woke up one time last night. I had a good nights sleep. My energy level was okay yesterday so I am hoping to get a few extra things done today. This is the week before Thanksgiving so I am in deep clean mode. I am trying different things this year. It will be a back to basics year. Just simple. Doesn’t that sound wonderful?

I will try and post the picture of the quilt. The quality of this picture doesn’t really show the quilting but you will get the idea. It is a printed nativity scene that I will put in the hallway. Hope everyone has a wonderful day. God Bless. I
