Just give me Jesus

What is the greatest Commanment? I think I will give this a try.....

The Greatest Commandment

Matthew 22:34-40
34  Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together.
35  One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question:

36  "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?"

37  Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'[b] '

38  This is the first and greatest commandment.

39  And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'[c]

40  All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."

B) Matthew 22:37 Deut. 6:5

C)Matthew 22:39 Lev. 19:18

Deuteronomy 6:5  Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

Leviticus 19:18  'Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against one of your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD.

I am in a Bible study and we are going thru the book of Matthew this year verse by verse.........This is how I see these Scriptures:

34. The Pharisees and Sadducees hated each other. They were not "buddies" but two groups of men that hated each other. HOWEVER, here you see the two not only form an alliance with each other, they are ready to form an alliance with the Roman control, whom they hated more.
Funny. Hate, breeds hate.

35. "Tested Him with a question". These super religious people, who were supposed to be oh so close to God, were "testing Him with a question"? HA HA How many times has God been standing right in front of me and I am so blind, I look right through Him?? Often. Too too often.

36. Good question however. It is very important to know the answer to this question. Maybe that is why God put it in His Word? So we would not go down some "bunny trail". There are so many commandments that we could get hung up on. Here it appears Jesus is clearing that up for us!

37. God first. Love. Agape Love. You can't "agape" anyone unless you love the Lord first. Real love. Only through the Power of the Holy Spirit can we fulfill this command. Not only does Jesus say "Love the Lord, your God", but He tells us how: "with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind". I noticed the word ALL. Not 1/2 , not one day a week, not when I feel like it or how I feel.........but ALL. He wants it all. This is a pretty straight forward Commandment.

38. "This is the first and greatest Commandment".
OK Now that we are clear. Jesus spelled it out. First and Greatest. We can know for a fact that any other commandment in the Word will come under this one........

39. Jesus says "And the second is like it"  "Love your neighbor as yourself"..........I see a pattern here. Love. Love. Love. Love. Love.
God then neighbor. Hmmmmmm something I don't see.......self. I don't see "well, you deserve this or that Laura". I don't see "well you work so hard you deserve this or that"........I just don't see that in this commandment.
Love God. Ok got that.
Love Neighbor. Ok got that.
Not that it's that easy, but these are pretty straight forward.......

40. WAIT A MINUTE! Only 2? I have only 2 commandments to follow? What about all the others? You know all the other ones in the Word? The OT and NT are full of "commandments" and do this's and to that's, don't do this's and don't do that's?
I only have TWO Commandments?

Makes sense.

If I Love God with my all.......I will read His Word and know Him. In knowing Him, I will do what He asks, to please Him. He will come first in all things.
Now here comes the tricky part.
Not everyone knows Him. Not everyone wants to know Him. Not everyone who knows Him wants to please Him.
SO here comes the hard part.....the second of the only 2 commandments that Jesus talked about.
Love your neighbor. Even when they don't love you, or God. Even when the DO love you AND God......but just don't know Him like you do.

I think I will follow ONLY these two commandments this week. In everything I do, I will bear in mind only these two commandments (the two that Jesus Himself, answering this question: "Which is hte greatest commandment in the Law" said " ALL the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments"

If Jesus Himself says these are the only two that matter.......that's good enough for me!! How freeing!! How refreshing!!

the reason they are commandments

is because they don't come naturally. They go against our human nature.

"Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. Colossians 3:12-14

I had a Sunday school teacher tell me once that every commandment given falls into one of two categories - teaching us how to love and show our love for God, and teaching us how to love and show our love for our fellow man.
so every commandment ever given has been almost a sub-commandment to one of these.
and if you look at the "big 10", the first 4 (and #5, too if you remember that God is our Father) talk about loving God, and the others (including #5) are about loving our neighbors.

Description
1 Timothy 1:15-16 Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life.
