Brotherly love?My lesson this week is very rich. I have been in the Word, in many places this week.......seeking.This is what I have found that really sticks out. Colossians 4:2-62 Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.I found "being watchful" interesting. Watching for what? His return? The signs? satan? But it says, "be watchful". Very interesting. 3 And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. He doesn't ask for prayer for his seeds to grow or for a better paying job...........He asks for prayer so that "God may open a door" so that the Gospel of Jesus Christ may be spread!! 4 Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should. First he prays for an 'open door' then he prays for 'the ability to proclaim it clearly'. This is amazing.......I would say this is smack dab in the center of God's Will, doing His Work. 5 Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. So the way we act does matter. Be wise in the way 'you act'. Of course it matters........everyone is watching!! Make the most of every opportunity. Life, is an opportunity. When you are standing upright and breathing.......there is opportunity. 6 Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone. Grace. I wonder what that word means in Hebrew? Charis is Greek and means the friendly disposition from which the kindly act proceeds, graciousness, loving-kindness, goodwill generally. Hmmmmm. Seasoned with salt. Jesus speaks of salt often. Think of all the uses salt has. 1 Thessalonians 4:9-129 Now about brotherly love we do not need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other. So I am guessing if I want to learn about "brotherly love"........I need to seek out Scriptures. From the sounds of this passage, there has been plenty of talk about his "brotherly love" prior to this passage. 10 And in fact, you do love all the brothers throughout Macedonia. Yet we urge you, brothers, to do so more and more.More and more. Love is obviously very important? 11 Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you, I love this passage. Make it your "ambition". Look up the word ambition. Mind your own business. Ok, I get that. Trust me.....I have enough on my own plate, I don't need to be sniffin' around anywhere else looking for their faults or shortcomings..... Work with the hands. Makes sense. The Word talks about the idle man.....and it's not good!!
12 so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.Hmmm respect of outsiders. Not favor. Not praise. Not friends or friendliness. Respect. And 'outsiders'. Would that be 'non-believers'? hmm again, it appears that all that we do and all that we say the main underlying goal is to draw others to Christ....... All that we do and all that we speak, should point everyone we meet, to Christ. Everything I do today, everyone I speak to today, should draw everyone who can hear, or see me, to Christ. If I open my mouth, and say "yes, I am a christian"....then I better be ready to show it. Better yet, maybe I should just shut my mouth, and just show it. I think that is what this passage is saying. Skip the talk, walk the walk........
I love Scripture.
