Homesteading is a state of mind

Yesterday was our 22nd anniversary, and we recently moved into our 23rd house. It might even be our 24th, but I don't want to count them up again.

Almost all of our homes have been in the country. We've moved in, dug a garden, made a chicken coop, and settled in to the life we knew. I didn't like moving all the time, and the last couple places have kept us for 3 years each. This move has been into town. I don't  know why God wants us here, but apparently it's the next step for us. It certainly is easy, anyhow. There is NO outdoor work -  we don't even have to mow the little yard. A professional service comes once a week and does it for us.

The inside of the house is a challenge for me. It is NOT country. I called it a Victorian farmhouse, but I don't think it is. It's very traditional in style. My dumpy furniture looks even worse in this elegant setting. DH brought home a nice little chair from the thrift store yesterday, though! The windows are tall and mostly BIG. I have never been a fan of drapes - I like miniblinds with valances if I must have a curtain at all. I have a plan for the kitchen and have even cut the fabric, but I am still trying to decide what to do with the rest of the windows. In the country,  in all of our previous homes, privacy wasn't really an issue. Curtains were just there to be decorative if I felt like I wanted them. We need privacy here, and the style of the house seems to need curtains, too. Heavy drapes and/or white lace, probably.

Upstairs, all of our doorways have transoms over them. I have not seen that inside a house before! There are double doors (like solid French doors) opening from my sewing room into our bedroom, and a single French door with paned glass opening into the office. The office will probaby have to serve as a guest room periodically, so I need to find a way to provide privacy in there. I didn't want to put a curtain on that lovely door!

I do love the high ceilings, and I like how light the house is. Our last house was dark most of the time. The wood floors are nice, but the dust bunnies sure show up fast!

I will post more pictures of my house as I get it organized and settle in.
