Ramblings

As I have warned before I am not a very good writer but I will try to ramble along as best I can. We live on a small homestead in north central Iowa and are trying to live a simpler life. I was reading another blog and they were talking about the "simple" life not always being so simple and I would have to agree. Doing things from scratch like cooking or building is not simpler than going and buying it pre-made. Tilling, planting, harvesting and putting up is not simpler than just going to the store and buying. There is a new "movement" about called "the slow food" movement. It basicly is eating local things in season, cooking from scratch and taking the time to truly enjoy your food. Definetly not "simple". There are some who give up all of the modern convenences in an attempt to live simple but I am not one of those. Oh I wish I were but I do love my washer and dryer!! Would I like to be off grid? You betcha!!! But can I run my PC ? My AC? Does it mean we have to go back to hand sewing to be 'simple"? I do garden, can, have chickens etc because I know our food chain has ..issues. I prefer things made from scratch. If I was younger maybe I could do without more. If T.E.O.T.W.A.W.K.I. happens we have the skills to get by. ( for those who don't read Countryside..The End Of The World As We Know It.) What am I trying to say? I guess I'm saying it is awsome we "homesteaders" have such different outlooks on "Simple" living and are doing it for different reasons. We can learn so much from each other. I have learned and loved reading all the blogs on countrylife/sustainable living. Blessings!!
