Down A Country Road--Over The Garden Gate

I hope your kidding......

The title is what my son said when I told him what we did yesterday.. Let's see if you can guess by looking at the pics......

Guess yet?? We installed AC in our barn for the bunnies...Yup..in the barn. We are in the middle of a freak (I hope) hot spell and putting frozen bottles in with them just wasn't cutting it. There is a large sliding door by them on the east side but even with both doors open to allow the wind through they were still getting way to hot and as some of you know...a hot bunnie is a dead bunnie. We installed a 5,000 BTU 110 unit that is rated to cool 150 sq.ft. This part of the barn has a wall on the north and south and the big door on the east,is about 11'x12' so it was pretty easy to put a roll of plastic around the bunnies to seal in the cool air. We left two top rafters open to allow the hot air to rise and escape. We did the plastic so on cooler days we can roll it up out of the way . The AC cooled them off pretty well but by the time we finished last night it was not so hot anymore. Today will be the test. I went out at 9 am and turned it and I will check every couple of hours to see if it is keeping the bunny area below 80. If this doesn't work their next stop will be our basement. Our basement is cement but not one that has a rec room or anything but still... bunnies are not excatly what I wanted in my basement.. Oh well... maybe they would keep the rats company.

Hi Patti! I can relate to trying to keep pets cool enough to keep them alive. Some years ago we had ferrets and the heat and humidity would just knock them out. This is probably not an option for bunnies of course, but this is what we did for them. I had a huge tupperware cake holder that I would fill with water and place on the floor. Toss in a few of those small plastic balls (cat toys), and they would literally dive for them. Absolutely hilarious. When they tired of the water sports, they\'d rub off on a towel and relax on the floor in front of a fan. Kept them cool and alive. I hope your bunnies do okay. I remember keeping hamsters cool with bottles of ice water in their cages. P.S. Did you say RATS in the basement? Eeeww!

Oh the things we will do for our animals! Hope everyone came thru the heat okay.

And rats in the basement...precisely why we have a new basement under this old house.
