A New Mission For the Weekend

One of my many missions for the weekend (alolng with the normal junk of doing the dishes and straightening up the house, and getting caught up on the laundry), is taking a complete inventory of the pantry and both freezers.  I plan on taking a BIG trip to the grocery store this weekend to "stock up" on alot of things.  We happen to have a little extra money (tax refund) now and have talked and prayed about this and have decided to stock up on what we need for the summer months at least.

We have a whole hog in the freezer, and lots of frozen veggies, and canned items, but I will need to stock up on hamburger and chicken when it is on sale as well as items to bake bread with  and paper goods (toliet paper and diapers mostly).  We  are stocked up on rice, and pasta too! YUM!

Any of you out there stocking up on pantry goods???

And if so, could any of you give me any hints of the trade on what I should get???

I have never done this before, but with gas prices on the rise as well as food prices, it seems logical to spend the money since we have it, on food items, so we don't have to worry about them this summer.

For storing you dried goods think about glass canisters or reuse glass jars from pasta sauce etc. We (consumers) are learning more each day of the dangers of plastics leaching toxins into our foods. :(
I have been blessed with a bunch of the old type of canning jars, the ones with the seperate rubber ring. They are no good for preserving anylonger so I use them to store our dried goods.
Dried beans are a great thing to stock up on as is brown rice and popping corn.

Have fun stocking up, I know I feel satisfied when our cupboards are full.

What a great plan for your extra money :)

We keep a pretty well-stocked pantry. My advice would be to only stock the things you use regularly. I've had things go bad because I stocked up on a good sale, but then over-bought the amount I would use in a reasonable time-frame.

Congrats on going paperless! We are almost completely paperless at this point. I use 'unpaper' towels (homemade towels made with double-sided flannel). We use flannel wipes as cloth napkins (we don't like the normal cloth napkins found in stores). We use cloth hankies (also flannel). I do still buy paper towels, but one roll lasts almost two months. We only use it for nasty clean-ups (doggy messes and the like). Even then, I have cut up old clothes and use them and just throw them away with the mess.

I use cut-up clothes as rags for cleaning as well.

We also use cloth diapers, and I LOVE them. They are MUCH easier than most people think. I use mostly pocket diapers, but I also have some All In Ones.

We use cloth wipes instead of baby wipes.

I use cloth mama pads, but I do understand that ick factor. I didn't think I'd ever do it either, but once I started using cloth diapers, the mama cloth just made sense.

Good luck with your pantry, I LOVE a well-stocked pantry :)

We haven't received our refund yet but I'm planning on doing the same thing.

thanks for the comment :) I'll be posting soon about our experience and a good blackberry pie recipe I made yesterday. (even though I'm supposed to be taking a break from blogging lol)

btw I'll have to ask the commentor where to get cloth mama pads...

You are so brave to be taking inventory. :) I will be interested to see how that goes. Maybe I will stop being so scared and do it myself? Nah, I'll watch you first. :P

The "disclosure policy" you found on my blog - I was about to give up on Payperpost. I jumped through one last hoop with that post (now I can link to it in all my later posts) and I'm finally on a roll now. I tried to "bury" it but dating it way back to Feb but I guess it's still findable! LOL
