Dressing Modestly Feminine: AKA cover it up girl!!!

We have a college student (AKA my adopted little sister) staying with us over spring break this year.  She came over last Sunday and will be staying with us until this Sunday afternoon.  Sarah is her name and she is sweet, quiet, shy, and yet fun to be around!  We love having her here and Noah loves his Aunt Sarah.

I understand dressing feminine and modestly has several different definations for most of us.  (Example: I think jeans are fine as long as they are not skin tight and cover all the important parts)  So before I even get started here, I want to express that I am not trying to open up another hot topic or debate on blue jeans and pants, ok???

What I don't understand is popular fashion these days.  Sarah is a taller girl and yet, she continues to wear jeans that are at least 4-6 inches too long (she walks on the hem of her jeans CONSTANTLY!!!)  You can't even imagine how this irritates me. LOL  I don't think she buys the correct size either, because she constantly pulls at her jeans at the waist pulling them up before they slip down her rea yet again.  I have seen her crack so many times it is pitiful.  (Sorry if this offends anyone)

I am at the point now, where I don't know whether she wears them because it is the style, or if she really doesn't understand how it looks on her.  I am not one to judge someone on their clothing, but I simply do not understand it! LOL

So, the dilemma is.....should I say something to her about it, or just let it go.  So far, I haven't said a word to her about it.

Thanks!

Amy Jo

I think you and I have been here before and somehow it all got dumped into my lap,by others, that I was judging and trying to shove my opinion down another throat.Wow! it took a week of me explaining over and over and over about my comment and trying to let others know that I was only giving my opinion to a question that was asked, I won't do that again.I want to give my opinion since you are asking all of the blog here, but I will do it by pm because so many only read bits and pieces of the question or just the comment and then they do not understand where my comments is coming from.I am off to send you a pm:)

Amy Jo, The kids are wearing the low-rise jeans. This is part of the reason for the pants going to low. I

I was a very late "bloomer" on understanding the obligation to dress modestly. I thought that was one of the *outdated* parts of the Bible we didn't need to follow anymore. (I hope you understand I am kidding!)

But truthfully I didn't give it enough consideration. I never had anyone who indicated to me that they considered modesty when they dressed, and it just wasn't on my radar. So, maybe just raising the topic in general will plant a seed.

Also: how about taking her out shopping for a sweet Easter dress or skirt? She would probably be open to something more modest for church, and at least you'll know she has the one outfit! LOL ;-)

Blessings,
April

This is a great opportunity to share Jesus with her!!!

Ask her about where she shops, why she buys what she buys, whats the new fashion today........then share with her that it's not her physical body that matters, it's her heart.

Explain to her she 'don't want a boy because he thinks she's hot'.........she wants a man, who loves the person God created her to be.
Let her know that clothes, ( a whole lot, or a lack there of) hair cuts, music, and so on tell A LOT about the persons heart........and the heart, is what matters.

Because it is what comes out of a man, that makes him unclean, not what goes in him, or on him.

My sister wears the same types of jeans. I don't get it either but don't want to offend her. She already thinks I'm old. LOL! Have a great visit with you sis!

My Daughter wears stylish jeans that are very feminine and up to date, but I dont allow her to wear the low rise jeans or shirts that come up to show the belly. You can be in style but modest.Things dont have to hang out here and there to look fashionable. There is nothing wrong with a girl wanting to look nice. The best example you can give her is by what you wear around her.She will begin to look at you and see what you wear that is modest.I am not one to constantly nag at a young lady unless body parts are hanging out and it is offensive especially if they are a new christian or not saved.Teach by example is what I say.Not by words.

I believe, if I am being honest here, that it is simply the age. How old is she, anyway? With the girls I know, at least, it is the age. I definitely thhink that what I just read up there is a GREAT conversation starter to share Jesus with her! I mean, if she doesnt already know. I dont know if you mentioned that already. I forget. LOL But, as far as the age thing goes, we have Derek's senior sister living with us and she is big into the low rise, showing-off-the-skin jeans. Same with my brothers. Well, the boy style anyway. I think that they just don't know any better. If they did, why would they dress that way? Right? =] I feel all of us go through that awkward youthful, trying to figure out what you love phase. At least I know I did. I also wasn't a christian up until last year. I was wearing low cut shirts, thought my girly boobs hanging all over the place was "hot" EWWWWW! Not any more! Haha! No cleavage for ME! =] But what I am trying to say is I think it would be WONDERFUL for you to say something, and encourage her. =] If you do it in the right way she will not be offended. =]

It's partly fashion, I would guess. I had an expensive pair of Silver jeans in a previous life . . . they fit at the waist but they dragged. I wore one cuff nearly off and it dragged behind me by about 5-6" . . . I was so proud of those jeans ... I wore them constantly with platform sandles around my husband-to-be and I felt like a queen.

Wow. If they still fit (two kids later!) it would be awefully hard to give 'em up . . . I did feel so girly and fashionable in them . . . and this is coming from a skirts-mostly now gal because I feel so feminine in them.... :)

Maybe she can't find her size long enough to drag and fit at the waist? ROFL Sorry, couldn't resist. That was so me. Except for the revealing my rear part. :)

Thanks for the memories.
