Let's Buy a Freezer....and Store a Whole Hog!!!

A friend of mine has a farma dn raises hogs.  She and her husband however are selling many because of the prices now on feed.  It is too bad for them, but as she said to me, it is good for us to be able to buy at such a reasonable price.  I have never done this before, so the whole process is a little foreign to me, but my girlfriend Amy has walked me through it so far.  LOL

We are buying a 200-250 pound hog.  We won't be sure how much it is till we ask the Butcher.  For many they are weighed on the farm, but Amy has a wonderful guy who comes straight to the farm to pick up the hogs and takes them in to process.  He is picking up several hogs today and one of them is ours!!! YIPEEE!!!!  I bought very little pork this month in our grocery trip because I knew we would be getting this around the first of the month.

I got the call last night the hog would be picked up and I could call Gary at the locker this afternoon to tell him what I want.  He will walk me through the process of how to process the hog and what we would like.  (Sausage, pork loin, etc. etc.)  He assures me Gary talks to beginners on this all the time and won't laugh at me for asking stupid questions. LOL

The problem??? We don't have a freezer just yet!!! LOL  We should have taken the last two weeks to buy one and have it set up, but with the flu traveling through our household and other very good excuses, that I just can't think of right now, we haven't. LOL  So today it is my job to go to a few stores looking for a standing freezer to hold our hog and hopefully they will either deliver, or my brother can loan us his truck to get it to our house.

We have the perfect spot for it on our back porch where our second fridge is, and where we store most of our pantry items.

I am getting excited to get this whole hog.  I will keep you all posted.  I am sure some will be interested because you are like me and have never done this before.

God's Blessings,

Amy Jo

Hey, Amy Jo... You will love pork this way! We raise piggys mostly for our own use, and we sell the extra babies. I bought bacon a couple of weeks ago, we ran out and Patrick wanted biscuits and gravy and I had run out of bacon grease too. But that was the first time in years. Watch out you just might get addicted!... Blessings to you and your family, Elizabeth

Good luck with the freezer! We are talking about buying a side of beef this year but haven't done much research into our local farms yet. We were blessed with a chest freezer left by the previous owners, so we are looking forward to filling it with meat and veggies!

Have a wonderful day Amy Jo!

That is wonderful that you are getting such a great deal on your hog! We butchered some last year and it was the best pork I have ever had.
Sorry to hear about your friends, and that was very kind of them to give you a great deal!

Congrats of the pork! We raised a small pig a few years ago for the meat. I called him Bacon, lol, anyway on the way to the market unbenounced to us he falls out of the trailer. The person behind us follows us for five miles and pulls us over and tells us we lost our pig on the highway some miles back. Girl, I was never so scared. I was so worried that that pig had caused a wreck on the highway. Well low and behold we found it eating under some old ladies fruit tree with her yelling, "what is that?". Now I know this women had seen a pig before! Anyway needless to say, we will never ever raise another pig again. I will buy my bacon at the store from now on, LOL.........Kitty

Well I just wanted to let you know that we also raised a pig this last year. We got it into our freezer around October 2007. It was great, very nice to have all of that meat at the ready. One thing that happened to us that I have since heard of happening to others was that I noticed that some of our bacon was really good, but then some of it tasted like OLD pig. When I asked my mom about it (she got half the hog) she said that she noticed the same thing. I guess sometimes the butcher will use someone elses pig to fill you order not necessarily your pig. Then they sell you good pig to someone else. Now I know that you just have to use a reputable butcher that someone else knows and has recomended. Sounds like that is the case with you, since your friends sent you to him. Well enjoy that tasty piggy!
