It was ok. We would have had more fun sitting at home snuggling on the couch watching a $2.00 rented movie and a homecooked meal made by my own hands. Why is it that I think date night needs to be outside of the house, with a boughten meal and some entertainment??? I got this from my highscchool dating years I suppose when we all went out to eat pizza and watch a movie, go skating or bowling, etc.
We arrived at the gym where the whole hog buffet and play were to be held. My family had already saved seated for Matthew and I and were waiting for us. Let me correct that, some were my family, some were my sister in laws family and some were just friends of the family, but we all consider ourselves family!!! I love my family, don't get me wrong, but I have learned that I just don't fit in with most of them. My sister in law was in the play (she looksed so cute in her old lady costume and gray hair in curlers. LOL I just know in 50 years that is what she will look like. LOL) and my brother was recording it on his camcorder. So most of the rest of the table were 20-30's. I am in that age bracket too but I would like to think that I have outgrown some of the immature actions and conversations that I used to join in on. You see I am a Christian and not just by name only. I live it, I walk it and although I stumble and fall......I am still a Christian who tries every day to make her Father above happy.
The rest of the table were text messaging during the play (the whole table was vibrating because they were text messaging back and forth across the same table), and even exchanging x-rated nasty pictures through text messaging during intermission. I was so disgusted by my own family's actions and words that I honestly didn't know what to think or do. They talked amongst themselves about these things, and the pictures were never shown directly to me, but I caught a glimpse of a few, and the words being spoken, it was evident what was going on.
What was really sad, was this whole play and buffet was a fund raiser for my brother's church in which all of them at the table except for myself and my husband attend! Just before starting to eat, my brother's pastor, Pastor Jim came to the table and sat a couple down with us. We soon found out the couple was Ron and Josephine and he was the Methodist director for some 90 some churches in the area and had come to the play to support one of his churches!!! The others never talked to them, didn't say hi most of the time to them, and didn't know their behavior was in front of a former pastor and the director!!!!
As soon as we were in the car and out of anyone's ear shot, I told Matthew that next year I will come on a different night that the younger family members (the older family members watch the kids on Friday and then they attend on Saturday night) and would either come when the older members came, or I would sit at a separate table without them.
I am amazed that these sort of things are still funny to them. Some people I know will never grow up. I am a kid at heart, and I love that in alot of people. But there is a difference in good clean fun (we hid Lawrence's pie and he looked for it and we teased him about good it tasted for 5 minutes before giving it back to him), and the nasty stuff they were joking about and sending pictures about last night. I am one of the good clean fun gals I suppose. I don't feel like a stick in the mud at all. I can laugh at a good joke, and I can handle a little razing from time to time as well. I realized last night that I have outgrown alot of my family (some of which are my age) and I have alot more in common with the family members who are 10-30 years older than I am. LOL
All in all, it was ok food, a boring play (sorry but it just was), and great company from the Director and his wife whom we exchanged email addresses with, but poor company with the ones I am related to! We spent half of our entertainment budget for the month on last night!!! Next time we will rent some movies and stay in where it is warm, put the kiddo to bed early and snuggle on the couch with a bowl of popcorn! LOL
