Slashing you Electricity Bill

Slashing your elctricity bill is something I have been interested in since logging into Homestead Blogger for the first time.  Now I am coming to you to ask for your favorite hints and ideas on the subject.

I am going to try to hang laundry in the laundry room to dry and thus save the energy used by the dryer.

I have also been talking to hubby about unplugging electronics and other household items at night when they are not in use.  My question on this is, hubby tells me the only items that still use some elctricity when not being used are electronics like the VCR/DVD player, the TV etc. and it doesn't save any energy to unplug lamps, the coffee pot and mixer, etc.  Is this true?

During the day when it is just Noah and I at home, I turn the thermostat down a few degrees and we put on sweaters and such.  When hubby is home, he likes it warmer in the house, so I turn it back up for the few hours before going to bed to warm up the house for him.

I don't run the washer unless there is a full load of clothes.

Do any of you have any other ideas for me??? I realize there must be other ways to slash our electricity bills but I just can't think of a thing!

God's Blessings,

Amy Jo

Your hubby is correct. Not everything pulls electricity when it is off. But your coffeemaker may if it has a digital display. Your microwave too. And your computer will pull power as well. Try putting these things on power strips then they are easy to turn off and on.

Try vacuuming the coils on your fridge. Dust can make it less efficient.

How about changing your lights to fluorescents? This will definitely save you a few dollars each month.

If you heat with electricity, that is a huge draw. Have you had any maintenance done on your heating unit?

And you can check the thermostat on your hot water heater and turn it down if it is turned up too high. Or try insulating it. Fewer showers and less dish washing will cut down on electric if your hot water heater is electric.

HTH!

Do you have a dish washer? Might want to cut back on that. I use tea lights at night in my windows instead of lights..
Use oil lamps
Do your baking once a week

I just wanted to agree with the above suggestions and also add that you can get towels to put at the bottom of your outside doors to block any draft. You can also hang blankets at your windows that may stop any draft there as well. We have a propane furnace but use several small space heaters because they are cheaper than running our central heating unit. If I think of anything else, I will let you know.

I found this great site that gives a breakdown of energy usage in your home. It is from a company in Nabraska, but I believe that it would be a general statement about usage. Check it out. http://www.nppd.com/My_Home/Product_Brochures/Additional_Files/electric_usage.asp

Wow, no ideas more than what you're doing, I'll be interested to see ideas from others....thanks for telling me you missed me on my blog. It's nice to be missed!! I'm back on it today, though. The time alone on Sat. was nice, I got some things accomplished. And what I'm going thru?? I call them 'growing pains'.....spiritual ones. It'll all come together, I'm sure. In fact, my spiritual mother and mentor always says it's times like these that she knows she must be doing something right for God's Kingdom, since Satan won't leave her alone!!! Must be right. On top of Monday's woes.....yesterday it was school and computer issues, details are over at my other blog.. Glad we're leaving the house today!!

All the above is great advice, so I'll just add one more thing LOL Check with your electric company and find out when their "peak" hours are and DON'T use your laundry, dishwasher and shower (if your hot water heater is electric) during this time if you can help it. Most "peak" times are in the evening, but can vary from company to company. Ours actually has 4 different rates for 4 different time periods during a 24 hour period! BTW thanks for stopping by my blog :o)

I love all the suggestions so far....we only use candles in the morning during the winter months. When I am finished using the oven, I always leave the door open so the heat can escape into the house. I always bake or cook more than one thing when the oven is on....if I am doing a roast, I always bake a loaf of bread, muffins or banana loaf etc....I never just do one thing.

We as well are always looking for ways to cut our entergy cost. I never leave the hot water heater on ,I cut the breaker off and on as needed. Big savings !!! I turn it on about 1 hour before husband gets home form work. I was dishes by hand ,(I never us a dish washer). We take our baths before bed ,and cut breaker back off. It is a chore ,but worth it . We go crazy when we forget to flip it back off sometimes. We also have a wood burner stove type fire place. That is our on;y source of heat . We love it and enjoy low light bills during winter. And I don't mind if it is rainy and can't hang cloths out on line.I just us the dryer .During nice weather I only line dry our cloths. So it equals out .Ac in summer ,wood heater in winter , I use dryer if needed in winter.I also got rid of the electric can opener and extra alarm clocks, glade plug in everybodys room. etc. Hope this helps , Shaune

I've watched a few shows and documentaries about saving energy and they do say that leaving things such as a phone charger, can opener, etc plugged in even while not in use draws electricity. I do leave my coffee pot plugged in because I don't want to have to reset the time every day, and because I have it set on timer. I leave my TV's plugged in because they'd have to reprogram every time if I didn't. I do unplug all chargers (cell phone, etc) and my can opener, toaster, blenders, etc.
