The Cole Homestead

My chickens ate my garden.

We left Sunday to visit my father in law early Sunday morning and did not return that day til late afternoon.  When we arrived nothing seemed out of the usual till I went to start a load of laundry in the back yard.  All 94 chickens had gotten out and were in the process of eating everything in my garden.  I knew I could not chase them all out so I turned the sprinkler on.  Luckily, it was close enough to dusk that they only lingered for a little while before returning to the coop for the night.  When I went out this morning, the damage was evident.  I lost about 12 cabage plants, 8 summer squash, and quite a few peas.  They did not seem to bother the tomatoes or onions and did not go over to the other garden which had green beens and cucumbers.  My husband thinks he has it fixed but plans to go over it a bit more thorughly when he gets home from work.  We work so hard on that garden every day, every year.  To see that much damage done so quickly is enough to break your heart.

Oh No! What a bummer! I'm sure your chickens had a great time. At least you didn't loose everything.
