Everyday I find a little more info that says maybe I am not crazy

Most of the planet still looks at me crazy when I am forced to talk about our eating choices, even some of my closest friends think I am a little fanatic when it comes to what I buy and willingly  feed my children.

Foods filled with chemicals are a big no no, food with no nutrition is another big no no.

Recently I was able to bring my sweet baby (ok ok Toddler) to visit with some old coworkers, the first they did was ask if he could have a saltine cracker, Booger is 14 months old and has never had a saltine I cant imagine why he would need to eat white flour and salt, but I let them give it to him.    I figured one or two wont hurt him.
Now later in the week I was subbing at the same place when one of these ladies told me I should save some potatoes and gravy for Booger.  I must of looked horrified LOL I really didnt mean to but the idea of feeding anyone in my family instant potatoes and packaged gravy was icky.  So I explained that Booger  eats mostly Organic, Now she is looking at me like I have sprouted a 2nd head.

Then Of course I read the great or not so great article from Cosmo on organics, I had to side with those who commented that whom ever wrote the article must work for Monsanto.  The comments are far better than the article by the way.

Back to the point, yet another study showing that food dyes and additives are Bad for our kids
and I wanted to pass it along.  Maybe I should print out my findings and keep them in a binder to hand out to the people I care about that think I am crazy.

Summer Garden supper.

I pray every day that one day soon my little garden will be a big big garden and I will be able to provide my family with its wonderful bounty all year long.  But until then I will continue to make baby steps.

Last nights summer I took a couple of large tomatoes, a walla walla sweet onion some fresh garlic, and a zucchini and diced it all up I sautéed the onion and garlic then added some fresh basil and oregano then I added the tomatoes and zucchini.

I then tossed this with some cooked pasta and grated cheese, the pasta and the cheese came from the store everything else from garden.

The night before we had strambolli  basically French bread with seasoned ground beef and sprinkled with cheese. I served this with fresh Tomatoes sprinkled with Mozzarella and broiled for a moment and slices of fresh Hermiston watermelon from the farmers market.  For this meal we only bought melon and ground beef and cheese.

I am looking for a good source of milk so I can make my own cheese I cant wait.  (I also need to post the recipe for parmesan cheese I will do that this week)

Tonight we will have green beans with bacon, melon, and fried zucchini and maybe a pasta salad.

I hope everyone is enjoying the summer bounty.

Our adventure for the week will be picking wild blackberries hoping for at least 20 pounds.

I spent more for Organic potatos then Organic meat

Yes you read that right and yes you read that right.

Let me explain myself, no I am not crazy,:)  however some times you have to splurge even when you are on a budget.

DS almost 1 loves Potato salad,  So I splurged and made a huge batch that should last all 6 of us for many additions to lunch and dinner.

This winter we plan to build 4 potato planters, then we can gow most of our own potatos in under 8 square ft.

Well I am off to find the perfect chicken tractor plans.  Have a wonderful night

Today was expensive, but worth it

Today we drove to town and enjoyed our closest farmers market. Everything was either  Organic or No spray,   2 of our favorite local farms are NOT cetified organic but both have been farming for 25 plus years and use no chemicals. The beef is certified

I spent 42. dollars

8 yummy tomatos

10 pounds peaches picked this morning

6 cucumbers

4 zuchini

4 garlic

1 pint raspberries just for nibbling while we walked,  Ill pick up a couple of flats from the farm directly tommorow for freezing and jam

4 pounds steak

On the way home we stopped by the creek and picked about 10 pounds of Blackberries as well

Hope everyone is enjoying summer and staying cool, we are going on our 3rd week of 100+degrees, so keeping the garden moist has been the top priority around here we should begin harvesting somthing besides green beens in the next couple of weeks.

Remember dont be afraid to talk to your farmers check your classified ads for veggies and when you can take the time to pick them yourselves,

Blueberries

We all went Blueberry picking last week, we went on the 3rd day after picking started at the nearby organic farm, the berries are wonderful.

Husband and middle son started off down one row I and the booger started off down another.  What an adventure it is picking blueberries with a toddler on your hip.  Now booger had never had fresh blue berries as his early arrival eliminated our ability to go picking lat year.  Booger loves fresh Blueberries he was pulling them out of my bucket almost as fast as I could pick themJ

Now for those wondering what this has to do with eating Organic on a budget let me get to that now.

My family spent about 45 min enjoying each other exercising we spent $8 dollars $10 if you count gas and we came away with 9 pounds of berries not counting the ones we ate.

We save about $3 dollars a pound, picking our own.

Needless to say we will pick about 50 pounds total before the season ends mostly to freeze I will make some syrup and jam as well.

See if you have a you pick produce place near you and don’t be afraid to take the children, We had Booger with us he isn’t yet one he road nicely in the sling and enjoyed the outing just as much if not more than the rest of us

camera issues onions and eating local.

I cant get my batteries to keep a charge so it looks like I will have to get some more, wont be heading to town till Fri I will pick some up then.

DS picked his first tomato today  and I got our first handful of beans

I will be getting 50 pounds of Walla Walla Sweet Onions next week, yummy yummy. I plan to freeze some, dry some, and make relish with some.  Does your State have a Vegie?  You should check it out.

Remember in some cases eating local is just as good if not better than certified Organic.  Get to know your farmers.

My favorite fruit grower is a small scale family farm that isnt certified but sells top of the line non sprayed fruit at the local farmers market or out of his home if you give him a call he and his wife and daughter do all the work and I can often get it only  hours old with very little drain on resources because it never has a middle man and is never trucked any place.

found a organic menu compared to a prepackaged diet

I enjoyed looking over this it is a little stilted in my opinion because even in going organic I drink more than water.  However it does show that it can be done.

Not sure where they bought groceries but the prices even for Organic seemed high, but it still worth checking out

http://www.mercola.com/2005/feb/16/organic_food.htm

Check later I will have new garden pics

The only thing Better than the farmers market is your own garden no matter how small:)

Have a wgreat day.

Heirloom and organic seed

While cleaning the inside of my kitchen and my pantry of foods that are non organic I have also started the process of cleaning out what I put in our garden.  I have one hybrid tomato still but after this year I will get rid of it as well.

So I have been looking for a compnany that offers the same kind of high quality product that I want to serve to my family.

I found Heirloom Acre seeds what a wonderful family run little company with a great variety of organic and heirloom seeds. Great customer service to boot

Definitely a five star place to shop

After this year I will be able to save all my own seeds and will only have to buy new ones if we want to try something new.

I love heirloom seeds one more way to save money:)

Come To The Table Food, Faith and Farms

I really love the idea of our schools and churches incorporating community gardens into their programs.  So while I was surfing blogs I ran across a thoughtful post.

GE food

I stumbled upon a website this afternoon. The True Food Network, a consumer site from The Center for Food Safety, goes "behind the label" to give the facts on genetically engineered foods.

if you're buying food produced by any of the following companies, you're most likely buying food which contains genetically engineered ingredients:

  • Aunt Jemima
  • Baker's (chocolate)
  • Betty Crocker
  • Bird's Eye
  • Bisquick
  • Cadbury
  • Campbell's
  • Carnation
  • ConAgra
  • Del Monte
  • Duncan Hines
  • Frito Lay
  • General Mills
  • Hershey's
  • Heinz
  • Hormel
  • Hunt's
  • Jiffy
  • Keebler
  • Kellogg's
  • Knorr
  • Kraft
  • Mars/M&M
  • Mrs. Butterworths
  • Nabisco
  • Nature Valley
  • Nestle
  • Ore-Ida
  • Pepperidge Farms
  • Pillsbury
  • Post
  • Stouffer's
  • Swanson
  • Quaker
  • Weight Watchers
  • Wonder (bread)

a more detailed list of foods that contain genetically engineered ingredients can be found at True Food Now  network
