Kefir...The New Drink

My goodness!  Suddenly kefir drinkers are coming out the wood-work!  I was able to relist my grains last week after giving them a break to replenish themselves.  Within 24 hours I was forced to take them out of inventory again!  I actually had to find a supplier to purchase more grains myself so that I can keep up with the demand.   Well, I found out that Oprah listed kefir on some top 10 food list... that explains it.

Is it really any wonder?  I mean, kefir is so good for the digestive tract!  And, once you develop a taste for the somewhat sour flavor, it really is delicious.  It can be used in many recipes that call for yoghurt or buttermilk.  Kefir is THE probiotic, in my opinion.  In a close second comes Kombucha tea.

I don't sell too many kombucha cultures, at least not compared to kefir.  Truthfully, once you get started on kombucha, you quickly become addicted.  And I don't mean addicted in a negative way.  You will notice the difference in the way you digest your food and when you don't have that glass of kombucha tea after your meal, well, lets just say that things don't run quite as efficiently.   I also notice that I have much more energy in the morning when I am drinking my kombucha.  The cold weather has made fermenting more difficult and I was forced to go nearly three weeks without my tea!  Aghhh!  It was terrible.  I spoke with my sister and she was having the same troubles with her cultures.  We both agreed that to be without it is no good!  You can truly feel the difference.

I am planning on getting started with water kefir crystals this week.  I love to culture and to come up with new ideas on food.  Supplements have a place in the average person's diet, but my opinion is that it is far better to eat live, nourishing foods than to take a boat load of supplements and pills everyday.  If your diet is in optimal shape, a good quality multi-vitamin should be enough.

Herbal teas are super way to naturally supplement .  They also provide additional hydration.  When teas are made with whole herbs and not ground up powders, they offer a multitude of vitamins and minerals in an easily absorbed form.

On another note...it is freakishly cold here in Michigan still!  If it does not warm up soon, I truly might go insane.  We are almost into March, for crying out loud!  We have goats ready to kid in another week or two.  It is 10 degrees today!  I don't relish the idea of plugging in heat lamps in the barn again this year.  I can never sleep very well for some reason knowing that our barn could go up in flames.  I know that I should be thankful and appreciate the weather for what it is, but I can't help but pray for God to send me some warmer weather.

I have a message board set up on the web site now, for anyone interested in sharing healthy knowledge.

Shalom!

I haven't made kombucha in awhile, although my starter is still in the fridge and from I read will last awhile in there. I really liked the first batch I made but I haven't gotten the last couple of batches to taste right. I need to try again I suppose, thank you for the reminder of how good it is for me.
Blessings,
Rashel
