Well, this is a first for me but here goes:

My name is Michele, I am a Christian wife and mother.  I have four daughters (ages 15, 13, 10 and 7) and we have always home schooled.  We are just two weeks away from moving into our house that we had built on our ten acres.  We are not new to country life, but plan to do more with our new land than we have ever been able to before.  We currently have 3 horses, 1 donkey and 5 pygmy goats.  We are planning to raise our own beef and also raise Katahdin sheep.  My 10 year old daughter would love to raise chickens and I would like fresh eggs, but I don't want a rooster around so I'm not sure about that.  I would love to hear from others with experience with chickens and especially with Katahdins. I guess I'll post more when there is more to post!

Hi Michele,

Welcome to the blogging world. We are glad to have you here. I have good news for you. You dont need a rooster to have eggs, you just need pullets. You only need a rooster if you want to have fertilized eggs, hence baby chicks. Hope this helps, Kay in PA

Michele - we are neighbors - I am in Louisiana. There are not that many people here from the south, so I am always so happy to have a "neighbor"!! I have 2 daughters 22 and 14 - 22yo is getting married Sat 2/4 - so needless to say - it is kinda hectic around my house right now. Looking forward to getting to know you!!
