Obviously, these are my favorite flower.  A neighbor came over today to see the garden and she exclaimed, "Oh, just like my gramma's garden!"  I love hearing those words.  It's neat to watch their faces as the memories come back of their childhood.  In their minds, there "there" again.

This is an old historic named "Delight"

Another historic.  This one we've not been able to find the name for.  I obtained a rhyzome from Washington state and another here in Montana so I'm sure it does have a name.

This iris is one of the most common historics you'll find in people's gardens.  It's name is "Lent A Williamson"

Like Delight, this historic is pretty hard to find.  My daughter LOVES this one.  It's name is "Minnesota Mixed Up Kid"

irises are my favorite as well! especially the deep dark purple. mmm! mine are starting the wilting stage.
They were here when we moved in, and imagine my delight last spring when I saw what those green things in my garden were! I need to learn how to take care of them and move them to a new spot because we are reorganizing the yard. maybe get some different colors - I only have pale lavender and the dark purple.

IRIS QUESTION

{ 06:24 , Saturday, June 21, 2008 } { Posted by gokings13 }
WHAT BEAUTIFUL FLOWERS!!!

I have a question?

A) This year, my iris's didn't bloom. They didn't grow a stem, and they didn't flower??
They have been in the same bed, untouched undivided for 5 years.

B) Should I divide?
How do I divide?
WHEN should I divide. I am in Indiana.......central.

C) Where should they be located / how much sun should they get??

My iris's were a 'deal breaker' when we sold our other house. I told the real estate agent that they go with me, period. So I dug them up, wrapped them in newspaper and put them in the garage!!!

5 years ago, I had 15 rhizomes. Today.........there are about 30.
Thanks for your help

Lets see...
I agree that your iris need to be divided. Schreiners Iris gardens has a good page on how to do this and then how to replant them. Here's the page I was talking about:
http://www.schreinersgardens.com/about_iris.shtml
When you dig up your clump, take a clean sharp knife and cut off the rhyzomes where they attach to the older (we call this the mother - often times older and sometimes half rotted) rhyzome. If you have 2-4 new rhyzomes all in a nicely formed bunch, I like to leave them attached, cut back the leaves to 6 inches above the rhyzome (this helps with loss of moisture and so they won't wilt down) and cut back the roots to 4-6 inches from the rhyzome if you want to.
I try to simplify my planting by tilling the bed first (I till atleast a week before planting and add till in composted manure. Then, with my hand, I dig two trenches about 6 inches deep and 2-3 inches apart (depending on the size of the rhyzome I'm planting). I take the back of my hand and push off a skim of dirt on the mound between the trenches, then I place the rhyzome (rhyzome resting on mound, roots hanging down in trenches) and gently push/rock it to snuggle it down and I place the dirt that I dug out back onto the roots. This seems to secure them better than laying them just below the surface of the soil. The rhyzome should be atleast half buried in your climate. For ours, I only want to barely see the top of the rhyzome.

Iris like atleast 6 hours of sunlight. They like well drained soil, so if you have clay soil and/or a lot of moisture, it's best to plant them on a raised row or area of the garden.
I've never fertilized with synthetic fertilizer. My iris love composted manure (not too much though - it all depends on your soil. If it's sandy or clay, I'd put about 12 inches on top before tilling. If it's loamy, I'd only put 4-6 inches on top.
You can use any compost too....

Hope this helps.
Happy irising!!!
