As soon as the satellite office opens this morning, I am calling to cancel our service! I've been wanting to do this for a long, long time, with much resistance from dh. But I finally got his blessing! I think he will miss it more than we will, but he's only home usually two or three days a week. That's a short time and a lot of money spent! So today it is gone! I will be stopping by Radio Shack to pick up a set of rabbit ears for the tv, otherwise we won't even get local channels. I still want to be able to watch the news and weather in the morning, and I know he will want to watch tv in the evenings when he's home on the weekends. I'm so excited about this! One less ridiculous bill, my kids won't be glued to a box everytime it's on, I won't have wasted time watching useless shows that just encourage me to want more! It will definitely be a blessing for all of us!
We do subscribe to Netflix, and have a lot of videos for the kids. I don't mind them watching movies though because I can choose what I want them to see. There's a lotta VeggieTales in this house!
Now to see how much of a hassle it is to return the satellite receivers. We had Directv, and I've heard some scary stories about recievers getting "lost" by FedEx (they send you a box to pack the receivers in, and Fed Ex comes to pick it up) and Directv sending you a bill for quite a few hundred dollars. I'm worried about that. We're cancelling early too, so there is a fee that will amount to about $150 (the guy told me we only had a one year contract, but it turns out it was two years, in small light grey print, on the backside of the paper.) But that's still a TON less than what we would have paid out in programming for another year.

Our television reception here is really bad too but the three stations we get in are more than plenty. We never got cable or satilite because I would feel guilty wasting all that money and would have to get my "money's worth" by watching it. So I applaud you in what you are doing.

What a blessing you're providing your family! Definitely - an unnecessary bill... and pastime! We've been without television, period, for years... and I must say... we do NOT miss it. You might surprise yourself and find you don't either! ;-P
God bless you!

Congrats!!!! I hope the adjustment goes smoothly. We don't even get local - don't miss it at all. :)
Of course I was raised mostly without, but dh grew up with cable. I can't imagine having to share dh with the tv!
We went TV-less as newlyweds, probably a good time to change a habit like that. ;)

Good for you! We have been a TV - less family for 15+ years and love it!!! I can get all my news and weather from the web, and we only have a vcr/dvd player for movies we watch as a family.
You'll be suprised how much more time you will have on your hands - watching tv can be such a waste of time!
Enjoy it!
