Time to start planning the garden

We need to start planning the garden. It is January here, but I know that there are some things that need to be done. I want to turn my garden over. We had one last year it was a nice little garden. We did learn a couple of things. The most important is that birdhouse gourd will take over a garden. It took over the entire garden. We didn't stake the tomatoes soon enough and some of the went bad :( We also learned that our neighbors liked to take our tomatoes and green peppers. Yes, we had them stolen. This was my children's project and well...needless to say there were some unhappy campers. This year we will be installing a fence. I will make another post about that. It is going to be soo neat!

Things that I would like to try:

corn(again)

bell peppers

cherry tomatoes

regular tomatoes

an herb garden

onions

carrots

cucumbers

mushrooms?? I don't know if these would work or not.

I am not sure what else. I need to look through a catalog I think. So any advice for someone who doesn't have a huge backyard?

This past year was our first year for gardening at Sisyphus Acres, and we had a pretty good first year. After enriching the soil tis fall with peat and compost, we will be ready to tackle this is the spring. Planned for the new garden: carrots, beets, turnips, rutabagas, corn, cukes, tomatoes (big and cherry), lettuce, onions, garlic, broccoli, cabbage, pumpkins, butternut squash, green peppers, peas, green beans, spinach, and cantelope. We are adding a new herb garden too, and some fruit trees and berry bushes.

This sounds great--you might check into Square foot or container gardening too! I've also heard of a 'lasagna garden'.....sounded interesting....

Great list....lots of our favorites!! :)
