abandoned eggs?

07:25 PM, Wednesday, May 16, 2007 .. Posted in Gardening .. 3 comments .. Link

We have a couple of trees that we planted about four years ago. They were just twigs when we planted them but have grown and are now about seven or eight feet high.

Even though the tree is still small, it has become home to some mockingbirds. This is their nest with two beautiful eggs in it. We made sure we didn't touch the nest or eggs, which is why this picture was hard to take! I'm a little concerned, though. We haven't seen any mockingbirds in the tree for two days. How often do the eggs have to be set on before they can hatch, I wonder? I hope they haven't been abandoned.

The mockingbird might lay three or four eggs. She won't start to set until the last one is laid, this makes all of the eggs hatch on the same day. If she started as soon as she laid the first egg, she might have the first baby needing food before the next is hatched.

So I wouldn't panic just yet. :)

I do hope the mommy come back so we can see the new arrivals when hatched. We have been here at our homestead going on 4 years and this is the first year we have birds chirpping..I have several feeders out and I think they have found them now. It is so nice to drink coffee outdoors in the morning and hearing them singing..If they hatch please try and get a picture when mommy is hunting for food....Have a good one...Debbie
