strawberry season

07:41 AM, Tuesday, April 24, 2007 .. Posted in Kitchen .. 2 comments .. Link

In my neck of the woods, strawberry season is just beginning. We love strawberries, but the one time we tried to grow them in the garden the birds feasted on the before we could.

So Sunday after church I took the kids up to Patterson Farms for the afternoon. It's a family run farm that has different things at different times of the year, but they are most well known in the area for their strawberrries. We hit the jackpot because we were still early in the season, and the strawberries were huge, plump and juicy!

And they even cost les than in the grocery store. We picked eight quarts for $14!

But what to do with all these strawberries? Yesterday I bought a hot water bath canner and some Sure-Jell, and today I hope to try my hand at making strawberry jam. I may also try to make a strawberry pie. Hubby said his grandmother used to do something to the strawberries and freeze them, then use what she froze to later make strawberry shortcakes. Does anyone have any idea what she may have done to them? Did she add sugar and mash them?

That looks like so much fun. We have a row of strawberries planted, but the cold zap got them for this year, but they should still put out next year. I might have to look me up a strawberry farm around here! :D
Have a great day!
Blessings,
Chas

They look like they are having fun...I miss that..We use to go into the farms also here in Louisiana and pick after the festivals, but as you would have it some people went into the fields and knocked down rows and destroyed the fields and our fun...Enjoy your pickings.......Debbie
