The results of finicky weather

04:36 PM, Wednesday, April 18, 2007 .. Posted in Gardening .. 2 comments .. Link

About two weeks ago these rocks we picked up on a mountain vacation ringed healthy green plants. My red cannas, to be exact, which had already started their growing season. The weather here in North Carolina has been finicky to say the least. We seem to keep going through a couple of hot days, than a couple of really cold days. A couple of weeks ago, after a few days of temperatures in the 70s, we had frosty weather and the ground froze. Most of the flowers that had already come up died almost instantly :( The green that you see in the cannas is actually weeds - which never seem to get frostbite.

This is one of my hostas. Part of it seems to have survived, but certainly not the whole thing. The rest of the hostas look pretty much the same. Some plants, like the azaleas and sedum seemed to do okay, but it remains to be seen if the cannas, hostas and others will attempt a comeback or not. Thank goodness we hadn't yet planted the vegetables! We had planned on that this weekend, but huge thunderstorms moved through and the garden became more of a pond. We were very glad we hadn't planted those seeds yet!

We are having the same thing happening around here in the mountains of So. California. THe apple trees are already blooming and there was snow on the ground Sunday some predicted for Friday and it has been about 70 degrees and sunny in between. I have a bad feeling about the garden, which is not yet planted as our frost date is usually Mother's Day. Ohh well - Just plant and see!

My hostas survived, I think. But then again, they are little sprouts just coming up. The largest is about 4 inches high.
But my cherry tree and lilac bushes are a mess because of this weather...Awful, wasn't it?
