It has been a week since I have posted. Boy, how the time flies. Here is an update on the happenings at Felark Field: 1) Chickens are still roaming all around. We have a 20 x 20 pen up but we still need to cover it and fix some "holes" where they can get out. It seems to have been a slow process but luckily all of our neighbors are understanding...especially when you bribe them with fresh eggs! 2) All of you ladies have been such an inspriation. This week I got back to a very well planned and organized menu which was posted on the fridge. We did so good until Thursday when life began to happen, but the glorious thing is that I had leftovers on the menu for Saturday night and we just skipped our Thursday night plan of chili and cornbread and had leftovers. We will have chili and cornbread on Saturday night now. The family loved having a menu and being able to see the plan. 3) I also made: - 2 dozen cupcakes - 2 loaves of Pumpkin Spice Bread - Angel Biscuits - 3 dozen Peanut Butter cookies I know it isn't much compared to what some of you do each week...but hey...it's a work in progress. 4) This past summer I inherited my grandmother's sewing machine. I don't know how to sew yet and have been rather intimidated by the machine but Thursday I dusted it off, got the book out to determine how to place the thead and bobbin, and sewed one small line on a peice of scrap just to make sure it works. IT DOES! I plan on posting an add on freecycle for scrap material because I want to try my hand at quilting. Also, my mother used to have a bunch of old patterns. I'm going to try to get those from her and teach myself all things sewing! Wish me luck! 5) The planned "garden patch" got a layer of kitchen scrap, a layer of newspaper, and a layer of hay from the chicken coop to "compost" down all winter. I am trying my hand at the "No till" method of gardening. Again, wish me luck! 6) Last night I filled out the Guide to Spring Indoor Seed Starting (You can find it here http://www.motherearthnews.com/uploadedFiles/articles/issues/2006-12-01/Seed-Starting-chart.pdf )in an effort to be well organized for the upcoming spring growing season. And finally, 7) This past week I spent some time clicking around Homestead Blogger and I came across a lady who is hosting a Bible Study from Restoration Ministries which is discussing how to restore the early church. I thoroughly enjoyed her blog and would like to participate in the study but forgot to add her to my "friends" list. If any of you are following along with that particular Bible study, would you be so kind as to leave her link in my comments, please. Thanks so much. I hope you all have had a GREAT week and a BLESSED week-end! Catherine |

Well, the chickens are still roaming. We purchased the material for the pen yesterday, cleaned out the chicken coop from head to toe because we have decided to switch from hay to wood shavings for the bedding. I have to be away today and will return tomorrow afternoon. Hopefully the pen will go up then! I hate being away from Felark Field. Does anyone else feel that way when they have to go out of town?? The day before yesterday I decided to bake bread. I haven't baked bread in several months and through the inspiration of several of you ladies, I have decided to jump back on that wagon. I made two loaves (I have pictures but just haven't gotten them onto the computer yet). I gave one loaf to my husband's co-worker and we are eating on the second. I love homemade bread but I find that my teenagers still like the tasteless store bought bread. Has anyone else been plagued with that?? I hope each and everyone of you have a blessed week-end. |

...or should I say the chicken before the fence? Yes, yes, let's start the blog off with what I am doing wrong, shall we? I won't bore you with HOW I got myself into this mess. That is another story for another day. Right now, I am in crises. We have 36 chickens. Yes, you heard me right, 36 chickens! I know, I can hear you all now, why in the world do you have 36 chickens. You are in your FIRST YEAR of experiencing all things homesteading. Haven't you ever heard of starting slow??
Anyway, I digress, all summer they have been perfect little angels. They have stayed in our yard eating all of the bugs their little tummies could hold. Now, however, the weather is turning and the bugs are...not as plentiful and my perfect little angels are roaming ALL OVER THE PLACE! Yesterday they were ACROSS THE STREET in the neighbors yard hunting for grasshoppers. Now, I know the obvious question is, do you have a fence?? The obvious answer is NO - - Why, you may ask?? BECAUSE, in our first year of experiencing all thing homesteading we deemed other things more important...after all, the chickens stay in the yard without one...don't they? Yesterday I told my husband on his next days off we are building a fence...quickly! |

Welcome. I'm so glad you stopped by. My name is Catherine and I live and have always lived in Texas. I grew up in a small town, moved to a small city, moved to what could have been a 20 acre haven but was too young and ignorant to appreciate it. Moved back to a small town, moved to a big city, and am currently on a one acre lot learning through experience what it takes to homestead. We have named our little place Felark Field as we share our place with the Felarks (also known as Meadowlarks). Our dream is to move to a much larger acreage and live as self sufficiently and simply as possible. This blog is a journal of what we're doing right, what we're doing wrong, and what we're just doing...not knowing yet if it is right or wrong. We invite you to share the journey with us. |
