What is in our food these days?

I went to the grocery store this afternoon, and since it is so hot outside I wasn't in a hurry and took my time,   Some of the products that I had been buying have shocked me, I can't beleive some of the ingredients that these companies put into these things.  Needless to say my family will either starve or eat what I feed them.  Before I went shopping I had read an article on www.thefamilyhomestead.com  about sugar, wow, that is an eye opener.  So it is organic sugar from here on out for me. or honey, molasses or maple syrup.  I really thought that I was doing well feeding my family healthy foods, but we are taking it a step further, no more junk food, I really want to know what is going into our bodies these days, We grow an organic garden and raise our own pork and beef that is all chemical free, so what are we doing eatting some of these same things I dislike so much.  After the grocery store I went to the health food store, and picked up a few different flours and chocolate chips, nuts and unsweetened coconut along with a few other items. Cooking from scratch without all those conveince things will take more time, but I love to cook and try to be as natural as I can.   Here is a great recipe I found on the internet today.

Chocolate Chip Granola Bars

Yield 16 Bars

4 cups of quick cooking organic oats

1/3 cup organic canola oil

2/3 cup honey

1 tsp organic vanilla extract

1/2 cup organic chocolate chips

1 cup chopped organic nuts (optional)

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Spread oats into an un-greased cookie sheet. Bake for 15 minutes, stirring a couple of times. Allow oats to cool to room temperature. Combine remaining ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Add cooled oats. Spread mixture into a 9x13 baking dish that has been sprayed or oiled, pressing down hard to compact it.

Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until golden brown. Cool completely and cut into bars.

I think Crystal mentions a book called Sugar Blues (by William Dufty) on her website. I've read it too, and it's very enlightening. It will make your next trip down the grocery stores even more interesting! :)

If you get a chance, I would really recommend reading it.
