• Wednesday, February 20, 2008 - Some of our farming plans
My husband and I sat down tonight and started discussing some of our farming and gardening plans for the year. Not everything is set in stone but we do hope to be able to do this. I have mentioned in a couple of my recent post I want to get back to canning like I use to. It just kills me to go to the grocery store and spend what I have to spend knowing we have plenty of farm land and not putting it to use like we should. Now the last three to four years a lot has went on that I have not been able to grow a garden or can. The year I had plenty in the garden I wasn`t able to can a lot because of my shoulder. Taking care of my grandmother, working, should and neck trouble and drought, it has just been too much. But I am hoping for a better year this one. We are coming up with some different ideas for certain things in the garden. This year we will have four different spots for garden. One will have corn, beans and potatoes. Then one just for my tomatoes. One spot will be for cabbage, lettuce, onion, peppers and etc. Then one for watermelon, pumpkins, greens, turnips and squash. There is more stuff I just can not think of everything right now.
Okay now on to the raising of animals to butcher. We already have a steer. We have also talked about buying a pig and fatting it up and butchering in Dec. or Jan.. Okay I said I would never do hogs again. We had a bad experience but after seeing what a great job purewater done with his. We started thinking it wouldn`t be that bad to raise them from young to just the right size to butcher. It was a learning experience for us and we will do things a lot different this time. We are planning on ordering fifty meat chickens and butchering them. I will order fifty next month and then 25 in late June or July. Of course a few of them will be set back for dd2 and ds to raise for the county fair. Hopefully DH will be able to get a couple of deer for the freezer too. Also some other wild game. I have two freezers I want to get stocked back up. They are just about cleaned out and I am having to buy a lot of meat from the grocery store. It is costly. Well we still have more planning. I will share more with you as we go. I am still keeping my fingers crossed for a good milk cow. Fresh milk and butter. Guess that is about it for now.
Sounds like you have been busy! My hubby is looking to get a pig this year too. His family used to raise them. It is the best tasting meat when raised naturally.
Have a blessed day in The Lord!

Everything taste better when raised on the farm. We butchered one last year but the meat is just about gone. With everything going on with our country right we just want to be as prepared as much as possible. I wish you luck with yours. sheryl

My husband thinks hard times are coming for many, with the high prices of food and gas and all that is going on.We are not concerned about having hard times since we have land and the know how. We are concerned for others though, so we will try to put up extra this year for sharing. This year we too are going to try and stock up. I was too sick to do much preserving this last summer, but I hope to be doing a lot of it this summer. We are going to put out a lot of fruit trees, but they won't bear fruit this year.
As for a hog, we just don't like the taste of the fresh hog meat. I guess we got use to the store stuff and it is hard to go back to the fresh, it taste too strong.
I am a stay-at-home, Christian homeschooling mom. My husband and I have been married for 19 years. We have been blessed with three kids, ages 18, 10 and 8. We live on a family farm and have several animals. I`m just a simple farm gal, who loves her God, family, friends and life.
