• Tuesday, February 19, 2008 - Planting your garden by the signs

I alway plant my garden by the signs.  This is the way my grandparents taught me.  My aunts and uncles plant their gardens by the signs as well. My mamaw would also do some of her canning by the signs. She always watch when she made her sauerkraut.    Now I always have to ask my aunt when to make it.  I don`t can sauerkraut much.   I am the only one who likes it in my family.  Sam and the kids will not eat it.   I love to make hot pepper, green tomato kraut.  I wasn`t able to make any last year.  I hope I will be able to this. I will check and see when the best time to can it is.  For some reason I am thinking you want to wait until it goes into the heart and head.   I think if you wait until it goes into the feet and bowls it will taste rotten.   I am not sure, like I said I always have to ask.
I was on the Farmers Almanac website looking for dates next  month.   March 16-18 is best planting days above ground crops. Peas, beans, cucumbers and squash. Climate permits. Plant seed beds.     I do plan on planting my peas on those dates.
March 30-31 any root crops that can be planted will do well.  I may plant a couple rows of potatoes.  Then that  way if the freeze in the ground I won`t lose them all.
I do know a lot of people around here plant their garden on the 100th day of the year.  I have never done that  but I am thinking about planting a little bit and see how it goes.  I just don`t want to plant my whole garden and take a chance on frost getting it.    Then I would have to plant the whole thing again.
I will have four garden spots this year.  I want to plant a lot more.  Hopefully it will be better this year than last.  I want to get back to canning like I use to.   Lots and Lots of canning.   How many of you all plant your gardens by the signs?   Or plant on the 100th day of the year?

I have to be honest, I had always be leary about planting by the signs. It seemed strange to me. But I have heard quite a bit about it lately and am very interested in learning more about it. I heard one woman say how it is spoken of in Scripture. I would love to know about that epecially! What I don't understand is this, you said,
"For some reason I am thinking you want to wait until it goes into the heart and head. I think if you wait until it goes into the feet and bowls it will taste rotten. "
Wait until what is in the heart and head of what? I have heard of great success in plating by the signs. Please tell me more! :-)

I am thinking about gardening so much lately. I really have spring fever this year. I will plant when the soil is warm 45 degrees or so. Probably in the beginning of April. This year we are planting strawberries and asparagas for the first time. I will also be planting our "usual" veggies too. I am thinking of giving a go at growing melons on a trellis. I saw this on the square foot gardening website. Looks interesting so I oredered the book from the library. None of my family that garden are alive anymore so I have no one to ask about planting on the 100th day and things like that. But I love hearing first hand what people do, not just reading it in a book.

I have planted by the signs for years too, or tried to at least. Hubby is now into gardening and he doesn't have the patience to wait a day if he wants to plant something! I do not understand how the signs work at all and only go by the almanac. Please tell me a little about this 100 day garden, I have never heard anything about that?? Very interesting subject, thanks for bringing it up!
