I received my foxfire 9 book today. I really haven`t had much of a chance to look at it. I have been enjoying reading my others I have. This one includes:
The general stores
The Jud Nelson Wagon
a praying rock
A Catawban Indian potter
Haint tales
quilting
home cures
and the log cabin revisited
When I was little I remember my grandmother scaring me with an old haint. Now I didn`t know exactly what one was and I knew I didn`t want to find out. I am assuming it was some type of ghost. Hopefully this book will explain it to me.
I was looking at some of the home cures. One of them for stomachache is drink a tea made from the lining of a chicken gizzard.
One old home cure I use and my grandmother did to. I learned it from her is to bake an onion. Drink the juice and then a make a poultice out of the baked onion and put on your chest. It will break congestion.
One of the things I have noticed in the books are poultices. They make a lot of them. I grew up with my grandmother making them too. One of them was making a polk root poultice for poison ivy. But that will set you on fire.
Another thing mamaw would make is a sugar ???? I won`t write what she called it. But anyway, she would take butter and brown sugar, put it in cheese clothe and tie it. That is what they would give little babies to suck on when they were fussy. Guess that is it for now.
I love to read the Foxfire series!!! They are so neat and there are so many good tips in them! I think I have read number 9. I started to read the section about Haints and I was too scared to read the whole thing. I am a big chicken, so I didn't want to scare myself!
Have a great time reading your Foxfires!

I love the Foxfire books also. A lot of the stories remind me of some of my family members. I called my mamaw, ,mamaw too. Mamaw and Papaw. Don't hear it alot though. I've heard of the sugar ----, had an aunt tell me to use one. Funny how times change.
I am a stay-at-home, Christian homeschooling mom. My husband and I have been married for 19 years. We have been blessed with three kids, ages 18, 10 and 8. We live on a family farm and have several animals. I`m just a simple farm gal, who loves her God, family, friends and life.
