Yesterday, I cooked white navy beans for supper. While I was sitting and eating mine. I started remembering about the different ways my grandmother did her beans. It also got me thinking about the garden. I remember my grandmother picking her half runners and cornfield beans. She put them up in the attic to dry out. She would pick them when they started turning yellow out in the garden. After they dried, she would hull some for seeds for the next years garden. Then she would hull some of the beans out and make white bean soup. They were so good. I thought if my half runners does good this coming year, I am going to dry some. She would take the bean hull and all. She would make leather britches out them. Now I am not crazy about them. I can eat them but would prefer canned green beans. But her and papaw loved to eat them. She would also make pickled beans. They are okay but I am not to crazy about them either. What I wouldn`t give to have some of her old time country cookin.
Thanks for sharing about your grandmother and how she did her beans. We lived in town and never got to have a garden. My hubby did though! I am sure they proably did like she did. He said they had beans and taters one day and the next day they had taters and beans. Heehee! they had them alot. Have a blessed 2008 and may all God's riches and best be yours. *U* rilda
