• Thursday, October 11, 2007 - Just a farm story

Yesterday evening I was over visiting with my grandfather and we were talking about milking cows.  Right now we have four cows that could be milk, but they are bad to kick.   One of them has horns.  Ok,  I am not big on having a cow with horns because my grandpa Akers was put in  a tree by a cow with horns.  I can say I was blessed to have both sets of my grandparents keeping the old ways of doing things  while I was small. Both of my grandfathers were farmers. Anyway, my papaw spent a week in the hospital because of his horned cow.  So I am nervous being around ours.   Last night papaw Ross was telling me that we could get her down and saw the horns off.  But we have to keep sulfur on the horns to keep flies from blowing them.   You have to leave stubs.   He told a story about my great grandfather Richard.   He said the Richard keep telling him there  was something wrong with an old bull papaw had, that he kept shaking his head.  Now this is an old bull papaw had saw the horns off.   Papaw went over to the barn to check on him and the stubs had scrabbed over and he thought it looked good.  Well a couple of days later grandpa Richard kept going on and on about it and said it could have the creepers.    He told papaw Ross he had better check on it again.    Papaw went over to check on him again so papaw Richard would quit worrying about him.   Papaw said he pulled off one of the scrabs and  sure enough there were creepers.  They were crawling out and guess he had to mix something up to boil them out of the stubs.   Gross, I know but when you leave on a farm you come across a lot of gross stuff and you just kinda get use to it.  Okay,  I had never heard of creepers before I just always call them maggots.  I guess creepers is an old timers term.  Well I guess I could have heard them call it that when I was younger.  i hope I didn`t gross you all out too much.  Sheryl

I have never heard them called that before either.
I love to read or hear stories of times of days gone by.
