Well we butcher another rooster today, and tomorrow he will be put in the pressure cooker. I am going to make chicken and dumplings for dinner. Along with corn on the cob and mashed potatoes, cornbread. While we were pulling feathers and clean the chicken up, my grandfather came over to watch. He was teasing my dd2 about hanging the foot of the chicken over the door. He told this story. Girls back when he was young would hang a chicken foot over the door and the next pretty boy that came though it, was the one they would marry. I asked him if that was really true and he said, "yelp". I wanted to post about it before I forgot it. I had never heard that one before. I love listening to stories my grandfather tells. Some of them are so funny. If you truly want to learn about old fashion ways find yourself an old timer, you will learn a lot. I know I have said it time and time again, I wish all this time I would have kept notebooks on what my grandparents has told me all my life. You don`t know what you miss until their gone. I still have papaw and there is so much he can teach me.
Now the way, my aunt and grandfather showed me how to butcher a chicken is different from what I have seen on the internet. Course the ones I have seen were skinned. I want to keep the skin on mine because that is where you get a lot of your flavor from. I still have four or five more to butcher. Hopefully this coming weekend I will be able. I would like to be able to post some pics of it.
Well guess that is all for now, sheryl
Something I have learned from this post. Always reread before you post and don`t post when you are really tired.lol
I know what you mean by getting an old timer.
I love old people, they are very interesting to me.When they talk I hang on every word just waiting to hear more.
I have one grandma still living, she is in her eighties.
We have some old chickens and a rooster that need to be butchered, soon. They will be good if I pressure cook them and make chicken and noodles.
