• Saturday, July 12, 2008 - Plans, updates and pics
I thought I would share some plans. We have a lot going on and a lot coming up. Here they go.
1. Canning and hopefully lots of it.
1. green beans
2. corn, and I will be freezing to
3. cucumbers, which I have already made 7 quarts of sweet
pickles and one pint. I am going to make
Bread and butter and dills pickles.
My canning so far. 14 pints of pickled beets, 7 pints of carrots, five pints of cherries. I have put up carrots, and zucchini.
2. getting the animals ready for the fair. Hannah is showing her
doe in breeding class. She is also raising meat chickens.
Sammy is still a cloverbud and can only show. He will be
showing a pygmy goat and a meat chicken.
3. Aug. 4 start back to homeschooling.
4. In the next couple of days, we will be butchering the meat chickens. We have decided that we are not going to raise them again. The price of chick starter is outrageous and it is just not worth it. I am spending about $20 a week on food. I lost about 5 of them due to them pecking on each other and then they would die.
Well that is just a few of my plans for the next couple of weeks. Now onto the pics. Corn and beans. Of course, all the weeds. Hopefully next week I will be canning beans. My corn should be ready in a couple of weeks. Sunflower and cucumber plants. I noticed while out taking pics, I need to pick cucumbers. I should have enough to make dill pickles. Another pic of corn and beans. I wanted to show what is happening to my roma tomato plants. I think an early blithe hit them. Too much water or I hit the root when I staked them. But the ones, I didn`t stake are doing the same thing. Hopefully, I will get enough tomatoes to make juice. The tomatoes in the garden are doing great.
I just about got to mention our hay. First cutting, we got 31 big round bales. Hopefully same amount for the second cutting.
Well guess I better go. I am going try and post a little more often. I do have plenty to share right now.
Don't give up on the meat birds! There's more than one way to skin a cat, as they say! Does anyone around you grow wheat or barley? Do like I do and feed them only enough starter to get them feathered out. Then gradually switch over to whole grains. They love them. It takes longer to get them as big, but I let mine free range and do the farm cleanup! They are awesome at it! Cow manure, pig manure, you name it. You can also put them in cages or "chicken tractors" in the garden and let them do the weeding!
Oh, and make it your mission to find out which weeds YOU can eat! It's all there for the taking! :-)
Thanks for your comment to my blog!

Your garden looks nice! That is too bad about those tomatoes, hopefully they will produce anyway.
