Brand New Baby

Posted on Sunday, August 24, 2008 at 09:55 by Beth's Brightside - 1 Comments - Post Comment - Link

Here's the newest addition to the family. He was born at 3:30 am by section after a lot of hard
work by Momma. He weighed 9lbs 9 oz, so it would have been something to get him pushed out!
Isn't he so sweet? Here's Momma and Baby, the little guy just about 8 hours in this world.
(And already deep in the System. But I'll be good and keep my mouth shut about that.)

Here's our family with the new nephew/cousin.

Looks just like his daddy!!

Uncle, pleased as punch apparently.

And here's the Marmee. She does such a great job taking care of all her "mommas and babies."
She's had three grandchildren born in just over a year! What would we have done without her?

Getting Caught Up

Posted on 2008-Aug-28 at 11:12 by KimMC - 1 Comments - Post Comment - Link

I've been crazy busy around here not leaving as much time to post as I'd like.

Last week we all came down with some virus that knocked the little ones and I out.  Then as they were just getting better dh hurt his back.   Poor guy woke up Fri. morning with a "kink" in his back and it got worse as the weekend went on.  He had planned to finish the strapping on the house but there was no way he could be up a latter!!  Sunday he needed a cane to help him get around.  Thankfully he's doing much better now!

So this week has been playing catch up on dishes, laundry and everything else that gets behind when your sick.  Yesterday I started tackling out book cases in the living room.  I moved all the gardening and homesteading type books to the case in our bedroom.  So now there is just enough room down stairs for our curriculum and reference books.  But really I need more book cases LOL.

I've also cleared off and cleaned 2 "hot" spots in the living room, the top of the TV and printer.  My desk is about half done to!  Yippee! LOL

I'v been working at setting up new school "centers"  put up and ABC chart, daily weather chart and a new world map.  I still need to resort the storage drawers but that shouldn't take TO long since I just did them a few weeks ago.

Maple Leaf Foods Recall

Posted on 2008-Aug-28 at 11:07 by KimMC - 0 Comments - Post Comment - Link

I'm sure most people have heard about this by now.  But just in case!

Maple Leaf foods has issued over the past few weeks a huge recall list, over 200 products.  The reason, contamination with listeriosis bacteria.   This also includes products they have made for other companies.   Sadly 15 people have died from it so far.

You can see a full PDF list of the recalled products here Maple Leaf foods.  And the latest news article here.

Homeschool Memoirs Assignment 2

Posted on 2008-Aug-27 at 08:04 by KimMC - 10 Comments - Post Comment - Link

This week’s theme is about sharing your 2008-09 homeschool agendas and plans. You’ve been preparing your plans for sometime and you’re ready to go. Or you’re still in the planning-stage and need some inspiration or tips on what to use. Because many use different curriculum and methods there is always something new to be gleaned from other homeschoolers. It’s always fun and interesting to see what other’s are using and the WWWWH as Robin Sampson suggests. So this week I hope you will share what you’re doing this year for your homeschool agenda. Share the different curriculum you’re using. You can also include what age/grade you’re using it for, how long you’ve been using it, and why you like it.

This is my second try at typing this up, I was almost finished when homesteadblogger decided to eat my post.

As far as homeschooling our family is eclectic in nature.  I combine unit studies, classical and Charlotte Mason methods to suit us.  We love notebooking, lapbooking and getting outside for nature time!

Our main curriculum is Five in a Row (FIAR) and Before Five in a Row.  I really can't say enough good things about their programs.  It is an excellent literature based unit study.  Each unit is based on a quality picture book that is read each day.  Then each day you do activities based on it.  They have suggestions for daily subjects or you can do your own. This program covers social studies, literature, art, history, science and applied math.  Adding in your favorite phonics and math program would give you a full and rich curriculum.

Even though FIAR is plenty for learning my girls have lots of different interests.  So I've picked out some other good multi year books to fill their interests.

  • Science
  • Apologia Botany
  • Nature Studies
  • We will also be doing smaller units on the human body and weather.

History

  • Story of the World Vol. 1 ~ We started this last year and are moving through it slowly.  We should be able to finish it this year.

Social Studies/Geography

  • Canada My Country
  • Paddle To The Sea
  • Continents

Language Arts

  • First Language Lessons
  • Christian Liberty Press Spelling
  • Copy Work (selected from Bible, FIAR books, Poems etc.)
  • Christian Liberty Press Nature Reader 1
  • Teach Your Child to Read 100 Easy Lessons

Math

  • Math U See

We LOVE this program!  It fits very well with visual and hands on learners.  DD6 is almost done Alpha and will start Beta in a few weeks.  DD4 might also start on the Primer this year to.

French

  • Ecoutez! Parlez!  Book/cd 1

Bible Studies

  • Leading Little Ones to God
  • Five in a Row Christian Supplement

Art/Music
We do a different picture study on an artist each month or so.  And use the Same method for studying composers.

We keep lessons short and do a lot of reading together.  "Extra" subjects beyond the 3 R's and FIAR are done 1 or 2 each day.  This gives us time to fit in everything we enjoy with out the stress of a long day.

A break down grade by grade:

Preschool, 2 year old (3 this fall)

  • Before Five in a Row
  • Lots of hands on activities and play

PreK, 4 year old

  • Before Five in a Row
  • Five in a Row
  • Leading Little Ones to God
  • Nature Studies
  • Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons

Grade 1, 6 year old

  • Five in a Row
  • SOTW
  • Canada My country
  • Math U See Beta
  • Ecoutez! Parlez!  Book/cd 1
  • Leading Little Ones to God
  • Apologia Botany
  • Nature Studies
  • First Language Lessons
  • Christian Liberty Press Spelling
  • Copy Work (selected from Bible, FIAR books, Poems etc.)
  • Christian Liberty Press Nature Reader 1

More Felt Booties

Posted on Friday, July 18, 2008 at 04:14 by Beth's Brightside - 2 Comments - Post Comment - Link

A sleepless night is my excuse for the blogging frenzy. Do pardon me.

So here are some felt booties I made for the Expecting Couple. I wanted a tennis shoe look
and I think they turned out pretty cute. The felt is 20/80 wool rayon I think.
I purchased a bunch of colors from Vintage Vogue.

'Stache Nappys

Posted on Friday, August 1, 2008 at 03:56 by Beth's Brightside - 2 Comments - Post Comment - Link

And no, not diaper nappys. *lol* Cara found a link for these so we sketched them out and appliqued
them for a stellar addition to the dinner table. Made for a craft swap in July and sent to Abby.

I must add that what makes these fun is the fact that you can hold them up to
your mouth and all at the table can sport a 'stache.

Tell me, can it get any better than this? I think not, my friend.

Garden

Posted on Tuesday, July 22, 2008 at 03:35 by Beth's Brightside - 0 Comments - Post Comment - Link

These pics were taken a while ago, so the garden looks quite different now.
(As in pole beans have been ripped out already.)

Little Man has been very patient to hang on the fence while I pick beans.
The dog and the chickens help keep him entertained.

This is the first time we've grown patty pan squash, and I think they are kind of weird. I've seen them before but I must admit to being deterred by the shape, of all things! *lol* I had a hard time trying to wrap my head around how to cut the things up. hey are very sweet and seeds are small.
Good raw in salads or marinated and put on the grill.

Curry Pants

Posted on Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 03:24 by Beth's Brightside - 1 Comments - Post Comment - Link

So I found the cutest shirt at the thrift store a while back, and I discovered that Little Man is actually big enough to wear it now! Yeah. The print is adorable, I think.

So I rummaged around in my material and found some think cotton that I liked and sewed up a pair of pants. I had shorts in my mind when I cut them out, but I made them too long and couldn't bear to cut that much material off. And now they're short enough they look like they're cropped a tad. *lol* I call them his curry pants, but others in the family have seen fit to dub them "Aladdin Pants." Ha hah.

Alas, I have no pics of him with them on. If I can get him to cooperate I will share.

Busyness

The bounty of the summer has been in full swing. The weekend after the party we went and
gleaned apple drops from a friend and also some asian pears and peaches.

We sauced about 2 1/2 gallons of applesauce and made butter (in the crock pot!) with half of it.
Whew! It took a long time. I also made 7 half pints of peach jam and worked on freezing green beans and
then canned a gallon of applesauce. All in all a tiring and profitable weekend.
