High feed prices-alternative methods!

{ 09:31, Saturday, January 19, 2008 } { Posted in Homestead info } { 1 comments } { Link }

I am so excited to write this entry!  I have read many blogs talking about the high cost of feed for farm animals....I too have cringed at the feed mill!  When I read one lady's blog that she might have to give up her animals due to the rising cost of feed....I was sad...we work so hard to get to a point of being self-suffecient only to find out that the cost is too high....I thought there must be another way!  I know farmers in the past did not have feed mills to run to every Friday to stock up on feed...How did they do it?  This started me on a very exciting journey.  I am researching all the alternative ways to feed farm animals-naturally and healthy.  Let me share some of what I have found so far.  Keep in mind this is new to me...so if any of you out there have direction..please share....I do not practice these methods yet...so I have no experience---but it is really exciting to look into!  Pastured feeding practices---Growing your own feed-organic options---these are all topics to research.  Here is some helpful websites I have found so far:      http://www.eatwild.com/index.html     They have a wonderful link to locally grown products in your state!  Check out this site:    http://www.eatwild.com/products/index.html  I was amazed to find a farm just 15 minutes away from me!

There are many more books and resources for this topic---I'll share with you as I learn more.  Blessings>Faith Farm

I know buying feed is becoming a big issue for us. It keeps going up. I guess when gas goes up everything else does to. Thanks for taking the time to look for other ways. The drought last year really hurt us. Our garden did do well at all. I got just a little canning down. We were lucky enough to get our own hay baled and that helped a lot as far as buying it. But we didn`t get enough to make it though the winter. We have just about enough for about 3 weeks. Our field corn burned. We did have our corn to feed the animals. We had a lot of money in it. We just have to trust in the Lord to lead us in the way we need to go. We have talked about holding out and let the Lord do his will. Thanks sheryl
