My Dh and I decided last year that we were only going to plant landscape that produced. If you are going to spend the time and effort to tend and weed flower beds you should get fruit from your labors. The one set of trees that do not produce fruit/nuts that we planted are the willows. We planted those in part to help with a soggy area in the yard and we really love the look of a Grand Willow...it takes us back to a time when we were kids playing under the branches. I have strawberry plants that were started last year that will be going into the flower beds on the new porch. I am adding to the bed on the East side of the house so we can have more Blueberry bushes. Ours are quite tall growers so always consider that when planting. The new fence will be home to this years grape vines. I have found that if I plant a salad bed close to the house that I have fresh greens longer in the summer. They stay tender and mild compared to the garden plants in the heat of the summer. There is alot of beautiful options to landscaping with edibles. No waste of time or money. So when you are planing this years garden don't forget about those "flower beds"! Flower beds produce too!
