Take a walk with me-

This is not a walk of fear but a walk of preparedness.  This is not a walk for those that believe money is always going to be available for what you need or that what you need is always going to be available...I have no problem with those that believe that-I want to believe that-but if you have something inside that is pulling you to prepare-like I do-here is a short walk of preperation thoughts.

As you start your journey down this road you must consider having the basics covered.  This is where my DH is sooo helpful.  His theory on basics is this *safe, warm, dry shelter, food availability, and water.  This is the foundation that our homestead is built on (physically not spiritually--any of you that follow my blog know that we are born again Christians that strive to do God's will in our life-that being said, I am addressing the physical aspect only in this entry).  Safe, warm, and dry shelter is probably going to be different to each person reading this, in our outlook it included a debt free structure built on land in a safe area that we would have the freedom to build, grow and raise what we needed.  The structure needed to be simple and effecient covering the basics of what we needed and no more.  It needed to be built for the climate that we chose, so we could best take advantage of what nature provided us.  When selecting an area to build a house, I know there are many, including myself,  who would love to have 20+ acres in the middle of nowhereville...however this is not always a practical solution...so think in terms of what you can work with and are you going to be able to do what you need to do with as little resistance as possible.   Cover the safe aspect....do you want your children raised there?  Consider the homeschool regulations if you are planning to homeschool your children...they differ greatly State to State.  Can you work with the home you currently have?  Do you have enough land to provide for your family's needs?  I had to start over but many of you won't have to.  That covers the safe-warm-dry basic need.  Food availability---If you had to provide for your family--do you know how? do you have the tools you need?  My answer was no-of course I don't.  So started my love for resource books-lol.  Food need is covered in alot of ways from the most basic to the very complicated.  I like to keep it simple as much as possible.  Start with a garden and a few chickens....you might add rabbits...then a goat...plant some fruit/nut trees...watch it develop before your very eyes.  If I can do it---one who knew nothing---anyone can.  Water---probably the most important and overlooked link in this plan.  You have to have water-your animals and garden have to have water.  If someone turned off the tap---your water is no longer available through modern methods, what is your plan.  Bottled water only lasts so long.  Consider your choices.  Do you have a well or the ability to get a well...Do you have a pond....Do you have a river or lake close to you?  Think about it.  Do you know what you have to do to make that water safe to use?  If your pump is electric..do you have a back up plan in the event power is out?  You can take advantage of rain with some simple water catching techniques.  Lots of simple options if just look into them.  I found a 500+ water take for a lil over $200-new.  Get creative.  Now that I have touched on that area  there are alot of things that you can do to prepare once your basics are covered....lights, sources of information, storage of goods, animal care and growth, your health and well being.  Just start somewhere-weather it be a back yard garden, reading a book, getting out of debt, or learning to make bread.  It is all good.  Pray alot and I truely believe God will open up doors for you in the direction you are supposed to go in.  I never claim that my way of doing things is right for anyone else, its just right for me.  Any one out there that wants some information in an area I have mention, I will be more than glad to share my experiences and flops...just let me know.  I felt like I was the only person in the world when I began to be led in this direction....definately the odd one---why would any one want to think like that!---what are people going to think?---a miriad of thoughts rushed through my mind---they all seem so silly now.  Maybe I just got used to myself-lol!  I hope this has been useful to someone.  If anyone has something to add--please do.  Have a great day and Blessings to you.
