I was wondering if any of you have an outdoor kitchen. When doing the finishing designs on our house we decided that we wanted an outdoor kitchen on the screened-in back porch. The reasons for this are mainly seasonal. First of all, living where we do it gets hot in the summer and we want a wood cook stove. So the simplist solution is to put it out on the porch. Also being on a homestead there is alot of butchering and cleaning, so a well designed outdoor area would keep this out of my indoor kitchen. Since our goals are to go 100% off the grid (eventually) this would help with the uncomfortable months in the summer. Alot of the garden produce could be cleaned and preped in the cool of the day with the southern breeze on the back porch. I want to put my large utility sink, work table, wash station (for laundry), and my cook stove in this area. If anyone has any suggestions or ideas about this I would love to here about it...I am still in the design mode of the back porch so it is still very changable-lol. I hope you have a wonderful day! Blessings to you and yours!

I have on my 'wishlist' a summer kitchen too! My mother in law has an old wood cookstove that she mentioned she wanted to sell at one time. I told my dh, that I wanted it! I'd love to make an enclosed room away from the house..a summer kitchen. Like the summer kitchens that the early colonial houses had. I live where it gets hot in the summer and a wood cookstove indoors would be miserable. My friend had a Bell oven made outdoors and she uses that for all her baking, etc.but it's not sheltered. You might be able to google bell oven to see what I'm talking about. It's really pretty. A simple room with woodstove and worktable would be nice...maybe a hoosier cabinet. I think that's what they are called...
That'd be so wonderful and practical for me....not sure I can get my family to understand that...but it wouldn't suprise them that I would want one.

HI
putting in a outdoor kitchen is a great idea.you will be so glad you did. Ours is sort of different from what you are wanting but I use it all summer long. I have a large fire pit and do alot of dutch oven cooking in the summer along with my newest creation (thanks to my crafty hubby) a spit for roasting our favorites that turns around over the pit. great for all those large cuts of meats(like roasts) I do up and freeze alot of meat that way.(i have three freezers) I have a laundry type deep sink and a sitting area along with a counter top made out of boards and plywood covered with a plastic table cloth and then clear plastic. It cleans very well.
as for the turkeys I have heard that Murray Mcmurray is the best as I am in canada and cannot order from the US. we buy from a hatchery in alberta and also hatch our own in a incubator, I have only ever bought day olds but have lost a few over the first of the season. Others have told me that I should be buying three week olds as they are more hardier and don't require the medicated turkey starter that is really pricey.
